Not the end of the road

This year over 1,90,000 students appeared for CAT (common admission test) with the hope of securing admission in one of the six IIMs. All combined, the number of seats in the IIMs range from 1,500 to 1,600. So that leaves thousands falling short of the cut off mark. So what’s next?

If the call letter doesn’t come from an IIM, it is not the end of the road since there are several good institutes that have made a name for themselves in their own way. As J.V. Murty of TIME Visakhapatnam centre points out, CAT is the qualifying exam for 80 other MBA colleges apart from the IIMs, and a few of them are among the top rung institutes in India. “This year it is estimated that the cut off mark for the IIMs would be 100 to 105. Students with scores between 90 and 100 can always opt for colleges like Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (for engineers only), Mumbai, and S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai,” he says.

Scaling further down, students with scores ranging between 70 to 90, can opt for institutes like Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Trichy, Fore School of Management, New Delhi, Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, and International Management Institute, New Delhi. Business schools like Amrita Institute of Management, Coimbatore, Birla Institute of Management Technology, Noida, Hyderabad Central University, Hyderabad, and Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, Kolkata, are open for cut off scores from 50 to 70. Murty says that apart from CAT there are a number of other management exams that unwrap a whole lot of options.
