MBA program coming to town

A unique opportunity for higher education aiming to prepare future leaders of the community is coming to Pickaway County this fall.

Berger Hospital is teaming up with Ohio University in Athens to offer OU’s professional Master of Business Administration in Circleville.

“We’re constantly meeting to talk about what we might do to expand educational opportunities for the community,” Berger President Tim Colburn said. “Why an MBA program? Because health care is a business, and we need to make sure we’re building and developing future leaders.”

Berger already has a partnership with OU at its Chillicothe branch to train nurses in Circleville, and Colburn said the success of that program gave Berger an inroad for more educational offerings locally.

The program, which takes about 22 months to complete, consists of one evening a week of classroom activities held via video conference with instructors in Athens and a weekend course once every six weeks on the Athens campus.

OU has been offering the professional MBA through outreach programs for the last five years, according to Dr. Ed Yost, OU’s director of executive graduate education and development, and he said it’s been very successful preparing students for the business world.

“This program is aimed at working professionals to complete an MBA in a non-full time environment,” Yost said. “It’s designed for people that who maybe don’t have a business degree to give people a background to turn into a managerial career step.”

Yost said the course is delivered with more group projects rather than class work, and that was part of the appeal for Berger, according to Suzanne Welker, Berger’s human resources director.

“We’re excited about the synergy the group will have and think the teamwork will benefit the hospital and community,” Welker said. “Business management develops over time and we want to maximize skill development.”

Students in the program will learn about analytical decision making, which focuses on making good business decisions and professional development, including managing people and resources, teamwork and leadership, according to Yost.

He said the course also gives professionals the opportunity to meet people in other businesses and build on local networks.

B-school admission funda.

Master of Business Administration or MBA is the name of the game among under-graduate students who are looking for a bright career in corporate world. In fact, a career in the corporate world with an MBA background has emerged as the most preferred option among students who are lured by megabucks offered to graduates from some of the top B-schools in the country. And, an aspirant’s craze to pursue an MBA programme from a top B-school is increasing by the day.

This is, however, only one part of the story as getting admission in a good B-school of your choice is easier said than done. This is particularly for students with humanities background. Sample this: A majority of first-year MBA students, as high as 73 per cent at the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi University have engineering background with work experience. At Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, the strength of students in first-year with engineering and science background in a batch of 122 are 81 and 16 respectively, Similarly, the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), a premier B-school in the Capital has 82 per cent of students in the first-year coming from the engineering and science stream.

And, there are B-schools of Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai which admit students with engineering background only.

So, do top B-schools prefer students with engineering background or students from humanities stream are finding it difficult to clear the entrance examinations? According to programme director of Master of International Business programme at IIFT, K Rangarajan, “This trend is not unique to IIFT alone. It holds true for most of the top B-schools. Moreover, applicants belonging to engineering or science stream do score over students from other streams due to the numerical aptitude of these students. This trend is seen wherever the entry is based on quantitative skill, even in bank recruitment and Union Public Services Examinations.”

MDI, which admits students through Common Admission Test (CAT), conducted by IIMs has close to 80 per cent of students in the first-year from engineering and science stream. The professor of marketing at MDI Ashok Kapoor said: “We do not have any bias but CAT examination measures aptitude for management, and here science or engineering or economics or commerce students score better than other streams. Moreover, we do not have any reservation or quota of any kind and the CAT score has more than 50 per cent weightage during the group discussion and personal interview stage. During interviews among several factors, engineering background and academic track record are considered.”

Even, Indian Institutes of Management, according to the director of IIFT Prabir Sengupta have a majority of students coming from an engineering background. A first-year student of FMS, Bikram Bindra, who is an engineer by profession has an interesting argument to the whole debate of engineers given preference over students from other background. Bindra remarked, “Today, our country is churning out engineers in large numbers. An MBA education is a natural progression for engineers who are looking for post-graduate education. These days there are more applicants with an engineering background for entrance examinations of top B-schools, and with them having better analytical and quantitative skills, they have an edge over others.”

Another first-year student from FMS, Nupur Maskara, who comes from humanities’ background agreed that students from non-science or non-engineering stream do find it difficult while dealing with data interpretation and quantitative skills section of the entrance examination of top B-schools. “However, more number of students from an engineering background do get through the entrance examination of top B-schools because there aren’t many students from humanities who are looking for a career in MBA,” said Maskara.

Indian MBA students value academic experience.

A Master of Business Administration MBA or the conclusion of a top B-school was one of the objectives of the gehegten an aspiring, it is looking for a bright career in the business world. The growing enthusiasm among the candidate countries to rub shoulders with the Who’s who of business, six years from the character of salary and a rapid increase in the occupational hierarchy, the MBA sought careers in these days . This is only a part of history as candidates adhere to school B of certain perceptions. And it is difficult to say whether they come from the richest in terms of education and experience or Pay-package.

A student last year at the Faculty of Economics of Enterprise (FMS), Delhi University Nandita Sinha Feeling that their entire experience has been enriched. Sinha said: “I feel that I managed to have enough to provide an opportunity for the application of theoretical concepts in my practice on my fieldwork, tasks and, finally, during the been my training. Learning appearance was as I expected lines member courses with an open mind, a place of entertainment prejudices. I was always ready to face new challenges, my way. ”

According to another final-year student of Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology (DMS IITD) Saumil Mody, “The themes that are in length, in theory classes was well supplemented by practical experience through orders and projects, the concepts should be done, live in an organization. The study was an exploratory education and experience. ”

Mody, but believes that the practice of exposure was very different, which is generally perceived MBA programs. He pointed out: “A direct interaction with leading experts in the industry has contributed to relate what is taught in the classroom. The concept of a duration of each project currently actually implemented the platform to get exposure to various sectors in the industry. ”

Another student last year, Management Development Institute (MDI) Kapil Sood, felt that learning situation was somewhat different from what he had planned, before a B-School. “I have always believed that there will be about classes, books and projects, but I realized that learning does not stop. It is, moreover, that, too. Real-life situations and problems that I have before, during organizing events as the Empire, Illumina Delphic and I have learned that to remain cool stress, “said Sood.

Each of them, moreover, use different criteria for the choice of specialisation. How’s decision Mody specializes in marketing and information technology (double) compared to other programs was established on the basis of content of courses, interests, Faculty experiences and current requirements of the industry. Sinha Standing marketing, because it had an interest in the region. “However, I have zeroed the subject of specialization on the basis of my training in the summer and direct projects that I have in the past three semesters,” said Sinha.

Sood, beyond was not sure what he wanted to choose specialization, MDI. “MDI is in B, unlike some schools, where we remain silent before the specialization of entering school. It gave me the time to understand my areas of interest over a period of one year. professors MDI was also very helpful and guided me in deciding on the subject, I had to decide, and I finally decided to do my specialization in the field of marketing and human Moll in resource management, “said Sood.

And waiting in the soil is a dreamer always on the rise, if you have just graduated from school B above in a few months. Sinha’s hope that if a society of their dreams. Otherwise, however, depends, as I have in my last round of collective Institute, “she added.

Mody expectations of landing with a dreamer really see the reality, as the spectre of enterprises, which they DMS IITD’s Campus, sees everyone with equal opportunities. Even Sood seemed optimistic, as he felt that this is the type of work they seek.

The next decade in business education

McGill University sees soaring world demand for business education in the next decade as a catalyst for change and a unique marketing opportunity.

The 940 universities offering full master of business administration programs in the United States and Canada can meet only a small fraction of the potential demand and their business schools must reinvent their approach to learning and attack the vast untapped market, says Gerald Ross, dean of McGill’s Faculty of Management.

“Studies estimate that 900 American universities can reasonably target a 10% share of the total market from supervisors up to top executives,” says Dr. Ross, the 60-year-old chartered accountant, teacher and consultant who assumed the McGill Faculty’s leadership in 2000 promising a rapid shift toward specialization.

“But the present output of MBAs is a drop in the bucket in relation to future demand,” he adds. “Thousands of new professors trained in the latest technologies will be needed and we must find radically new ways of delivering our services to compete for corporate dollars and the top students.”

Universities have begun to adapt by making their bachelor of commerce and MBA courses more flexible and attuned to a multi-segment market, he says. Management faculties are collaborating with other departments in joint-degree programs; students may choose shorter versions of the standard two-year MBA; and courses are being shared with European and Asian business schools.

“Core MBA programs, based on marketing, finance and strategy may not change much, but faculties must become more accessible and open to diversity and demographics. We pride ourselves on teaching entrepreneurship, but we need to become entrepreneurs ourselves and smarten up our marketing or others will move in with interactive systems that know no borders.”

Dr. Ross says the surge in demand for business education stems from five years of shocks: the digital revolution, globalization, the shift of economic power to Asia, the dot-com meltdown, Enron and Worldcom, the corporate governance crisis, SARS, mad cow disease, terrorism, outsourcing and the health care crisis.

“Business won’t be the same again and many other sectors of society urgently need better management skills. Management courses must anticipate critical issues and provide many more specialized models. Within a decade, learning will be accepted as a life-long process.”

McGill’s Faculty of Management is rapidly expanding its range of specialized degrees. It already offers seven different kinds of masters programs, including a masters in manufacturing management, MBA/law, and MD/MBA. Also MBA FastTrack is a short program for those who already have a BCom and MBA3 is designed for those who are working. A masters of management in finance and an international masters program for health leadership are among others that will follow.

The McGill International Executive Institute has launched the directors education program, focused on strategy, board functions, financial reporting and audit systems in partnership with the ICD Corporate Governance College and the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Its one-year advanced leadership program is a shorter version of an international program founded in 1996 by Henry Mintzberg, McGill’s best-known innovator and author of Managers Not MBAs.

These programs bring together senior executive teams from corporations such as Alcan Inc., Bell Canada Enterprises and Domtar Inc. to find solutions to urgent issues with the benefit of the university’s research.

The faculty, two-thirds of whose 75 members come from outside Canada, has seven on-campus research centres specializing in management, strategy, entrepreneurship, globalization and other subjects. The doctoral program is offered in partnership with the three other Montreal universities.

Excluding part-time executive development activities, the faculty has about 700 students in MBA programs and 75 at the doctorate level. More than half the students come from outside Canada.
