ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING graduates should possess the following characteristics:

Ability to adapt to changes and adopt new ideas; Aptitude for mathematics and science (especially physics); Analytical ability to interpret plans, diagrams, test materials and products; Ability to identify and discriminate colours; Ability to work well with others as part of a team; Good communication skills, both verbal and written; and willingness to upgrade one’s skills and knowledge on a continuous basis.

Electrical engineers have a key role in all kinds of industries and firms - large and small. They find jobs in power plants - atomic, hydroelectric or thermal. They can build careers in public and private sectors such as railways, civil aviation and all types of manufacturing plants.

Apart from these, they can find employment with companies involved in manufacturing consumer electronics, electronic components, computer hardware, radars, medical equipment; firms engaged in making power, energy, automation and control systems; private utility companies and companies producing electrical appliances and instruments.

They can also join railways, steel plants, heavy electrical plants, Akashvani and Doordarshan, Post and Telegraphs, atomic energy establishments, civil aviation, Defence Science Research Organisations, electricity boards and undertakings and Public Works Department of Central and State Governments. A career in electrical engineering offers challenging opportunities in a wide range of activities from research and design to operations, management and planning.
