A trainee management is a management internship is a Management Trainee, n’est-ce pas? Well, not quite. No doubt, the Management Trainee (MT) is quite the end of the corporate food chain, but apparently there is an ecology intelligent stipulates that the microcosm. What does a TM-like leaders of arrivals is not the same as another, and that the qualifications and demand and supply equation very case. Would proof? Take a look at the BT-Omam Management Trainee content Survey 2003, focuses on the compensation of more than 100 companies in 17 sectors. While the average annual earnings operates under RS-25 lakh 3.20 per cent less than what Junior managers in these areas, intra-industry average much higher: 5 lakh RS, in the case of FMCG, a depression R 2.14 lakh for restaurants.
Although it only covers part of the dynamics of MT compensation. To give an idea of what is actually happening, we need to understand the difference in pay between MTS and junior managers. Indeed, this shows two things: first, as regards the labour market at this level is looking and two, as an employer is ready, its “Fast-Track-white-collar apprentices. It is not surprising that the sectors which, in a crescent halsbrecherischen the peak speed. Take telecommunications, for example. Here, the difference is only 9 per cent, followed by council (10 percent), banks (11 percent) and BPOs (14 percent).
East interesting to note the difference of two-wheelers in industry (6 percent) is the lowest, but it should not be an accurate indicator for change at ground level. Why? As a traditional production industry, it probably has a significant number of workers in blue, were up in the management of Junior, but on the basis of low wages. Says Sulajja Firodia Motwani, Joint Managing Director, Kinetic Engineering: “We have a lot of people from the administration, accounting, etc. under management Junior. But we rent m B-schools-known, most often in late jump from junior level. ” In societies, LG, where there is no significant difference in the qualification of junior managers and MTS, wages are calculated on the basis of skills and merits.
Still, in all sectors of the economy, manufacturing services, level of vocational trainees were quickly on follow-up to managerial level, simply because it is competent in management tools and techniques which are now an integral part of any decision-making process. Even Bilt, a paper producer, places MTs directly to the managerial level, once they were confirmed. Says Tapan Mitra, director of human resources in the BILT: “A lot of juniors in our front line management supervisors are mainly shop floor manager. Apprentices But with its application capabilities can even skip the junior level management.”

Management Study, mouth of the people known as the MBA, is the watchword of the 21st century, the education system. A work after an MBA is generally accepted that, send an office job with a lucrative package, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, laptops and conference rooms with all modern comforts.
Words such as branding, strategy, marketing rural five forces model and analysis of the causes an MBA studies are not superfluous. But for implementation, the term “exploitation” to the lowest level must be addressed.
“Contrary to other studies, the first year as a Management Trainee” in an organization is not only a problem of theory and practice. It is rather a question of perception and reality, a lack something “future leaders” and a little left ungesagt intermediaries, “says Hans Kuntal Aria, a management trainee telecommunications Tata Services Ltd.
Business schools have a launching pad attractive. But success comes only through hard work and endurance. Dean, Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi (DU), Professor PO Chopra said: “Management students make attractive offers and treatment packages. At the same time, they must work very hard, very competent and committed to their work . ”
Chopra adds: “We give a very realistic image that our students. For example, we say about their Hindustan Lever Limited, which makes its staff in some places across rural India, where it will not be available modern . In addition, GE Capital, Will maybe even a desk and a computer with others. ”
An MBA gives an overview of the different functions of an organization. There is a basic understanding of the jargons and framework conditions, in conjunction with a Manager’s Job.
The incharge, SP Jain Centre of Advanced Management Research, Faculty of Management Studies, YOU, South Campus, Professor Raj S Dhankar said: “Students have to earn their place in the organization. We must work hard and accept challenges, the top “.
Associate, CB Richard Ellis South Asia Private Limited, Parul Trehan said: “Management is learned” on the job “and not in the B-School. Furthermore, we need to make lifelong learning, in conjunction with the hard work. ”
Case studies are a widespread phenomenon on campus, in practice, in view of MBA courses. After Kuntal, most of these projects were either “in-house or on the Internet or a library is based either on the basis of research collected senior secondary

I remember,” says Sanjiv Lamba, MD, BOC India, of a memorable moment wooing B-school students, “we once placed a dozen oxygen cylinders on the stage, and turned them on in front of a hall full of management grads, and asked how many would be interested in selling the product.” This presentation was part of the Pre-placement Talks (PPTs), and competitive recruiters had already moved from clickety old slide-shows and yawn-inducing speeches to SFX-enhanced razzle-dazzle. Students had to be hit between the eyebrows, went the prevailing wisdom. “There was stunned silence for close to a minute,” recalls Lamba, “apart from the satisfaction of giving them clean air to breathe, we didn’t get much of a response. Maybe we should try laughing gas next time.” At least nobody would forget it.
But Lamba and his fellow recruiters are going easy on the confetti-n-hoopla shows nowadays. It doesn’t work. On campus after campus, it’s back to the basics: the ‘talks’ part of PPTs. What used to be the mandatory Q&A session is transforming itself into something of a dialogue. “We talk to them about what we expect from them and what they can expect from us,” says Lamba, who holds himself up as an example too, having made it to the top swiftly after signing up as a management trainee with the company just 11 years back.
Shaping The Talks
Before getting to coffee at midnight with students, though, recruiters have to do their ‘market research’. For companies such as Maruti Udyog, this means engaging first-year students long before they’re actually up for jobs. Company managers routinely take guest lectures, and encourage students to visit their plants. “The idea is to co-create a sense of rapport and value,” says S.Y. Siddiqui, Chief General Manager (HR), Maruti, “and thereby establish a clear lead during placement time.”
There are other interaction devices too. “An MNC last year did a two-day workshop at IIM, Bangalore to convey their initiatives in different product categories,” recalls Y.L.R. Moorthi, professor of marketing and placement coordinator with IIM-B. And B-schools are only too pleased to have such corporate involvement. “We ask companies to get involved with the students at a more direct level-by organising classes, guest lectures, discussing case studies with them etcetera,” says Professor Abbasali Gabuli, Chairperson (External Relations), S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai. It’s an exercise in mutual learning.
Sometimes, the spadework takes the form of formal surveys. Beginning 2003, TCS has been using commissioned research reports to gauge motivations. “Job content is going to be the primary driver this year,” discloses Dilip Mohapatra, head of recruitment at TCS. The other drivers, in order of preference: one’s own growth prospects, learning opportunities, take-away pay, work independence, market value enhancement, corporate ethics, market performance, company’s growth prospects, favourable work environment and cross-functional mobility.
Remuneration is always a hot issue, and this year, TCS expects fresh MBAs to assign greater weightage to take-home pay than cost-to-company packages. This could be because they expect their first jobs to be of short duration, and are thus less concerned about career-span benefits. This is an insight TCS expects to make the most of in its PPT pitch, currently under rehearsal.

I remember, “said Sanjiv sheep, MD, BOC India, with an unforgettable moment wooing B-students,” we once the situation in a dozen bottles of oxygen at the scene and has turned to a room full management graduates, and asked, as many would be interested in the proceeds of the sale. “This presentation is part of the pre-placement discussions (PPTs), and competitive staff has already been the intermediary of the former Dia clickety - Shows and yawn-inducing speech SFX strengthening Razzle-dazzle. Boys had to be made between the eyebrows, was the dominant wisdom. “He was dismayed silence nearly a minute,” remembers sheep “, - Apart from fulfilling their clean air to breathe, we do not have much of an answer. maybe we should try nitrogen coming period. “at least, nobody has forgotten.
But sheep and his colleagues and staff mediate in n-confetti hoopla shows today. It works quite simply. On campus after campus, it goes back to the foundations: the “discussions” part of PPTs. The previously mandatory Q & A session turns into something like a dialogue. “We are talking with them about what we expect of them and what they expect of us,” says sheep, stands himself as an example, soon after the head after registering as Management Trainee that with the company, only 11 Years.
Interviews
Before turning to coffee at midnight with students, but staff mediator to meet their “market research”. For companies like Maruti Udyog, it means that studies of the first starting well before they are actually used for employment. Company Manager habit of taking conferences and invited students to encourage them to visit its facilities. “The idea is to create a joint report and sense of value,” says SY Siddiqui, Chief General Manager ( HR), Maruti, creating a clear advance in the placement of time.
There are also other devices interaction. “A year ago, MNC has a two-day workshop in IIM, Bangalore, their initiatives in different categories of products,” remembers YLR Moorthi, professor of marketing and mediation with the coordinator IIM-B. And B-schools are only too happy to such a society participation. “We are asking the company to familiarize students with a more direct level by organizing classes host lectures, case studies, etc. talked with them, “said Professor Abbasali Gabuli, Vice-President (External Relations), SP Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai. It is an exercise in mutual learning.
Sometimes the spadework takes the form of formal investigations. In early 2003, TCS has been in the order of research reports to measure motivation. “Work is the main content pilot this year,” says Dilip Mohapatra, head of recruitment in the CHT. Other drivers, in order of preference:’s own prospects for growth, learning, Take-away pay the independence of work, increase market value, businesses of ethics, performance market, the company growth prospects supported the work environment and multi-functional mobility.
Compensation is always a hot topic, and this year, TCS expects fresh MBAs assign greater weight at home as to pay the costs for business packages. This could be because they are awaiting the first to create short-term jobs, and are therefore less worried about the benefits of career-span. This is an overview of TCS is expected that most of the PPT in its height, currently under General sample.
Open-ended dialogue
Dialogue is the adrenaline pump once the content of the questions. With the plethora of information, students have already voted in the foundations. “Students, which in turn to the study of interactions also the background of the companies concerned and appreciate the staff intermediary, the plain with them,” said Gaurav Nagpal, a member of the cell to mediate IIM, Calcutta. And ” us “is often a request for disclosure credible, as many management would say that really it. Are they really formulate the strategy? But Sanjay Muthal, Senior VP of the group (HR), the Hinduja group, is that their headers.
According to Sanjiv Goenka, vice-chairman, RPG Enterprises qualitative expectations are quite crucial to the fresh MBAs and most sensitive are being addressed, he notes with silk. “We are discussing with them about career advancement and the level of freedom, they can expect during operation,” he says.

MUMBAI: In order to connect to the youth, HUL has launched a portal, www.coulditbeu.in. According to the company, this is a unique initiative as it provides a one-stop shop on leadership lessons.
In the first phase, the portal is available across 14 campuses to 3,000 students, of whom 85% have already registered. The idea of the portal was conceived keeping in mind certain attributes of the current generation.
HUL, general manager, HR, Sachin Chhabra says, “There are some characteristics unique to the present generation. Typically, these folks have two e-mail accounts, are lateral thinkers, begin tasks in no particular order, need their space, express their individuality through blogging, demand instant gratification and get bored easily. Through this portal, we are trying to expose them to some real-life challenges and constraints. ‘Could it be u’ provides them with an opportunity to experience how individuality can and must coexist within frameworks.”
In a typical situation, a management trainee after completing 12-month long business leadership training programme (BLTP) at HUL leads a team of 20-25 employees, has about 70-100 customers and at any particular point of time, has business of about Rs 300 crore. Since the person is fairly young and in many cases, does not have prior work experience, these lessons on leadership become even more relevant.
Moreover, with the India growth story where younger people are increasingly taking on bigger responsibilities, such an initiative becomes more critical. A student at NITIE, one of the 14 campuses where the portal has been launched, says this is a great way for HUL to select from a large talent pool.
“Though HUL is an aspirational company for many, some students might perceive it to have a slow culture. I think the idea of the portal is to communicate with students and tell them that HUL is a fun place to work with,” says Tarun Lalwani (name changed) of NITIE. However, Mr Chhabra dismisses the belief that this exercise is being used as a means to sharpen the hiring processes.
“We believe that large roles today do not always provide the luxury of a sequential learning process, skills followed by leadership. Both need to be developed simultaneously. This is definitely not a hiring tool as there can be many more cost-effective employer-branding initiatives which yield better returns. This is a part of the larger agenda of getting the next generation ready to fire rather than an uneconomically large investment to hire our annual talent needs of less than 50 people from business schools,” says Mr Chhabra.
This interactive portal has various contests, tips on making a resume, interview and placement tips and reading material on leadership, among other features. In one of the recent contests, students had to come up with innovative branding strategy for the cause of the girl child. These five winners ran the Mumbai marathon with the HUL team.
The 14 campuses where the portal has been launched include the six IIMs, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai, and SP Jain Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai, among others. The second phase will be rolled out in June and the portal will be launched in other B-schools and some graduate colleges, too
