Seminar on operations management

OPUS 2005,’ a seminar in operations management began at the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIMK) at its campus near Kozhikode on Saturday.

The seminar revolved around the theme, `India Industry at Crossroads: A Century after Industrial Revolution’. The seminar discussed India’s emerging position as one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and the increasingly important role that operations play in an organization’s growth.

The seminar was an attempt to sensitise the management students to the challenges faced by organizations, and to expose them to contemporary approaches in the field of operations .The seminar is being organised by OMEGA, the Operations interest group at IIMK. The Hindu Business Line was the media partner.

Saji Gopinath, faculty coordinator inaugurated the seminar. Mohamed Iqbal Dabhoiwala, Lead Consultant - Supply Chain Practice, Bristlecone India Ltd., Narayan Rajagopalachari, vice-president, Global Consulting Services, i2 Technologies, Radha Mohan Gupta, Head of Logistics - Reckitt Benckiser also spoke on the occasion.

OPUS 2005 also had a case-study competition named `Opstimum’. The preliminary rounds had been conducted, with wide participation across IIMs and top B-Schools. The selected finalists presented their solutions to a panel of judges from industry and academia on Saturday.

Indian institutes of management rule but newer business schools are not far behind

The Business Today-AC Nielson ORG-MARG survey has ranked India’s business schools based on certain performance parameters. The parameters include, reputation, success and quality of placement, infrastructure and faculty.

The responses to the survey came from 5 distinct groups, current management students, aspirants, young corporate executives and recruiters and functional heads. A total of 427 respondents participated in the survey.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, topped the list of premier management institutes in the country. IIM, Bangalore, and IIM, Kolkata, ranked second and third respectively. Through the top positions are held by the IIMs, the newer institutes like Loyola Institute, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, SP Jain Institute and Indian Institute of Foreign Trade are not far behind.

“Innovation is the only way to always have an edge.

DIRECTOR effective innovation has become the key to growth of India in the context of increasing competition due to globalization and the emergence of disruptive technologies in the world. The two directors and companies must constantly renew itself for an edge in the competition.

B-school festival ends the war with paper

Set-2002, a three-day festival, which began in the XLRI October 18.

The improvement of institutional climate university

MICA announcement in the certificate management of broadcasting

Mumbai: Mudra Institute of Communications Ahmedabad (MICA) announced, Post-Graduate Certificate Program Management broadcasting. The course takes place on the premises between the 12th MICA 11 August 2003 and May 2004.

The nine long months, the course focuses on the needs of new challenges in the management of television and radio companies - that demand for new skills, new knowledge and a new spirit of the game, which also increases the employment opportunities.

Students would also have industry internship for eight weeks and four weeks of production and training.

Education:
MICA says that the program was developed in collaboration with renowned experts in the industry. This program is a unique blend of academic skills and practices of mica consequence of the industry. The learning process includes training courses in advanced theories and applications of broadcasting management in conjunction with industry internship.

Career:
Pupils and students were ready for the opening of a career in the Entry-Level Management positions in content management, programme coordination, production, marketing and media research of broadcasting organizations. At the end of the programme, students would be provided by the Institute for internships in industry.

Designing glory.

Design, the world over is seen as a key asset by high, performing companies. In fact, a research in the UK shows that the top 5 per cent of high, performing companies give design a high level of importance. In India, the Ahmedabad-based National Institute of Design (NID) has taken a lead in producing world-class design professionals since it was established in 1961. Even, the different programmes at the under-graduate and post- graduate (PG) level at NID have evolved over the years to keep pace with changing times.

The executive director of NID Darlie O Koshy said: “We have moved on from the industrial to information and knowledge age. The Indian economy too has become a service-based economy, and this comprises more than 50 per cent of our Gross Domestic Product. We have recognised the role of technology and management, and now design will play an important role to further the cause of Indian economy. The Indian mind has proven its worth in this information age, and the same mind can be used to enable India a powerhouse through design.”

As part of its efforts to introduce new generation programmes, NID plans to introduce a PG programme in ‘Strategic Design Management’ from 2005. “The two-year programme would enable the students to develop design based on leadership and entrepreneurial skills and empower them to become wealth creators in this field. The programme enables students to participate in lectures, seminars, incubation clinics and workshops to develop their design management competencies as leaders and entrepreneurial design managers in the respective organisations. Students with a degree in humanities or those with an engineering background can apply for this programmes. The number of seats offered is 20,” added Koshy.

The programme has been developed with the involvement of leading academicians from several countries in the field of design and design management. Students who complete the programme successfully shall be well-equipped to enter any industry or consultancy as strategic designers, design entrepreneurs, design managers, contributing either as team members or as a team leader.

The institute plans to establish an ‘Automotive and Mobility Design Centre’ at Gandhinagar, Pune or Gurgaon in future too. “Our country provides unlimited opportunities to those who are looking for career options in this sector because of the tremendous growth witnessed in the automobile sector during the past few years. At present, innovations in automobile design technology are only taking place in Italy.

“We have sought financial help from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, Automotive Research Association of India and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers to set up the centre. We have spoken to people in TELCO, Mahindra, Hero Group’s Design Centre, and everyone felt that India needs a dedicated design centre in automobile design centre,” remarked Koshy.

A PG programme in automobile design with an intake of 15 will too be launched at the centre from 2006. “We hope to churn out high-calibre designers who can meet all the requirements of automobile industry,” remarked Koshy.

IIM Calcutta keen on churning out entrepreneurs.

THE Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) has identified the development of entrepreneurship as a priority area. The premier management institute has decided to take concrete steps to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among management graduates, said Dr Shekhar Chaudhuri, Director of IIMC.

Speaking to Business Line after distributing awards to the winners of the i2I (ideas to implementation) 2004 event held here on Sunday, Dr Chaudhuri said the need of the hour is to produce more entrepreneurs “which will be good for the country’s economy.” On its part, IIMC would encourage its students to turn to entrepreneurship and make a difference to people’s lives.

According to him, management students should not confine their aspirations to high-paying salaried jobs. They could well become successful entrepreneurs “because entrepreneurship also needs managerial inputs”. An entrepreneurial orientation among the service holders would enable them to “face challenges better and initiate and manage strategic changes in the companies they work for.”

IIMC already has its own entrepreneurship development cell, the activities of which are primarily student-driven. The idea is to set up an entrepreneurship development cell and an incubation facility with assistance from the National Entrepreneurship Development Board of the Government of India during the months ahead. “This will enable us to orchestrate ideas and activities, which are now being put forth in a disparate fashion,” Dr Chaudhuri said. IIMC would soon launch programmes of 3-6 months duration on entrepreneurship, he added.

One hundred and forty entries from across India were received for the i2I 2004 event. Out of this, the top eight business presentations on the different facets of entrepreneurship were short-listed for the final event.

Offers flood for students in XIMB
