His father is retired, served previously as vice-chancellor of the University of California at Santa Barbara, and as a professor of political science at the University of Berkeley, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara campuses. At least 20 firstyear students at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta are place for foreigners on board this summer as part of their summer internship programme.

Mr. Alexander, a graduate of the Hotchkiss School, was educated at Yale and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. His previous marriage ended in divorce. The economic slowdown notwithstanding, placement at the indian institute of management, bangalore, was something to cheer about. for the first time, a student of an exchange programme at iimb participated in the 2002 placement process and accepted an overseas lateral placement offer from dr reddy’s laboratories. the student, from mcgill university, canada, was one of the 39 spending a year at iimb from among its 24 partner business schools in north america, europe and australia. the placement process, which concluded in the last week of february, saw some 90 companies showing a keen interest in recruiting graduating students. final placement activities were initiated by pre-placement talks with 80 companies, of which 78 confirmed their participation. however, only 55 companies actually recruited on-campus by making 158 offers. another seven companies — coca cola, ge capital, hsbc, jp morgan, johnson & johnson, lehman brothers and siemens — made pre-placement offers. of the 25 students who were made these offers, 22 accepted them and opted out of final placements. another 15 students who had off-campus job offers in firms such as smithkline beecham, indus league, citibank technologies, lowe lintas and zee network also opted out of campus placements. the total number of offers received by 163 students of the graduating batch that participated in placements was 183. the largest single recruiter on the campus was digital india, with eight offers. “as expected, the economic downturn in the us and europe resulted in fewer jobs abroad for the iimb students. however, the most sought-after foreign companies did participate with students receiving 20 foreign placement offers from six companies. the average annual compensation package for the 20 job offers based abroad this year was rs 45.8 lakh, higher than last year’s average annual compensation package of rs 40.2 lakh,” ganesh prabhu, chairman, placements, told the times of india. the average annual compensation package for jobs based in india was rs 7.3 lakh, marginally lower than last year’s average annual compensation package of rs 7.6 lakh. the average annual compensation package for the batch as a whole (foreign offers, indian offers and off-campus placement offers) was rs 11.5 lakh.
