Information Technology (IT) holds the key to kick-starting a revolution in banking, said Radha Unni, chief general manager, State Bank of India, here.
She was inaugurating a national conference on `Braving new frontiers in banking,’ organised by the ICFAI Business School, here.
She called for standardisation across banks and appealed to them to take the services to the doorsteps of the customers for financial inclusion.
Anoop Narayanan, security consultant, First Legion Consulting, said human fraud, incompetence and errors made the implementation of new technologies difficult. He also spoke on information leaks and the cultural factors involved.
Punjab National Bank senior manager Guru Murthy spoke on the implementation of core banking solution. He provided an overview of the technologies used in mid-level interactions, in the back offices and in internal monitoring and reports.
K.A. Joseph, managing director, Kerala Venture Capital, summarised the session on IT in banking by providing an overview of mobile Internet banking. He said that IT should equip bankers to convert future threats into opportunities.
A.K. Basu, general manager, State Bank of Travancore, spoke on private banking. He highlighted the various challenges faced in private banking.
Ommen Jacob, regional sales manager, ICICI Bank, said the challenge before private bankers was to provide their customers with the best service in the industry. The Chief General Manager Thiruvananthapuram Regional Office of the National Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development Bank (Nabard), Mr. Shekhawat Brunswick, said that the problems emerging in the banking sector can not be solved with solutions today.
Delivering his speech at a national seminar on “reforms of the banking sector in the new era” here recently organised by the Institute for the Management of Kerala (IMK), Mr. Shekhawat said that reform was a continuous process. The need of the hour was not perfect, but all the forces of excellence in its efforts to ensure that banks purveyed.
According to him, less than 10 per cent of funds paid by banks on their own, such a situation and asked for more stringent measures if banks in India have participated in international benchmarks in the industry.

MBA students of the Institute of Management in Kerala (IMK) are organising a South Indian Management Meet, christened ‘Mania-2004′, here on August 7 and 8.
IMK is the Faculty of Management Studies, the University of Kerala, and operates from the University Campus, Palayam, in the city. ‘Mania - 2004′ will be the 10th edition of a regular annual feature in IMK’s scheme of things right from year 1994.

As part of its efforts to bridge the digital divide, TeX Users Group (TUG) has decided to tackle the geographical divide. For the first time, the annual meeting of the TUG is to be held at a venue outside Europe or North America. The 23rd annual conference of this free software users association will be held in Thiruvananthapuram Technopark this week, Mr Dominik Wujastyk, Director, Welcom Centre of Medicine, University College, London told a press conference, here. Mr Wujastyk, a Sanskrit scholar and a member of the programme committee of TUG-2000 said the three-day meet starting September 4 will be chaired by Mr Sebastian Rahtz, Information Manager, Oxford University Computing Services. The conference will have 32 delegates from Australia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Iran, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA. There will be 32 Indian delegates too. In India, TeX is widely used in institutions like the IITs, the Indian Institute of Science, Saha Institute of Theoretical Physics, and the Indian Statistical Institute. In Thiruvananthapuram, the Centre for Mathematical Sciences has long used TeX, as has Focal Image Pvt Ltd, an Indo-UK joint venture that has been using TeX for over a decade to run a profitable text processing venture. Mr Satheesh Babu, chairperson of the TUG-2002 organising committee said the meet would give a fillip to the wider utilisation of TeX in India.
