VADODARA: A P J Abdul Kalam’s sources of inspiration are well known by now: high-tech missiles, the Bhagwad Gita and the veena.
But what ‘ignited’ the President-elect’s mind was a girl’s simple answer to his question during an interaction with students of Anandalaya High School in Anand during his visit in April. Mr Kalam’s poser was simple but serious: Who is our enemy?
Snehal Thakkar’s answer —”Poverty and unemployment’’ —won over Mr Kalam and earned the 17-year-old an invitation to her idol’s oath-taking ceremony as the country’s 12th President in New Delhi on July 25.
Mr Kalam, who addressed the students of Anandalaya after attending the Institute of Rural Management (Irma) convocation on April 12, has also mentioned the incident in the preface to his latest book, ‘Minds Ignited’, which he has dedicated to Snehal.
“It was unbelievable. I was thrilled when I found that he had dedicated his book to me and recounted the meeting so vividly. Seeing him take oath as our country’s President will be a great honour for me,’’ said Snehal, who took the early morning flight to New Delhi from here on Wednesday.
Snehal and two of her schoolmates, Ankit Saxena and Dishma Patel, will be among the 100 children attending the function. Rashtrapati Bhavan sent the invitation to Anandalaya recently and has also invited Irma chairman Dr Verghese Kurien.
In his dedication note, Mr Kalam wrote: “I dedicate this book to a child who is studying in class 12. Her name is Snehal Thakkar. On 11 April 2002 when I reached Anand by road in the evening, it was under curfew following communal disturbances. The next day, at the Anandalaya High School, while talking to the students, a question came up: ‘Who is our enemy?’ There were many answers, but the one we all agreed was correct came from her: ‘Our enemy is poverty. It is the root cause of our problems and should be the object of our fight.’ ”
Snehal now dreams of meeting Mr Kalam personally.
“I was touched by his gesture. I wonder if I can make my way through all the security arrangements to go up to him to thank him. I would like to do something for my country like he has done and make everyone proud,’’ she said.
