Chandigarh, Aug 12: Brushing aside the warm welcome planned by his associates, PUSU president Malwinder Singh Kang, who was bailed out from Burail Jail today said that their agitation will continue till their demands are met.
‘‘This is not the time to show signs of victory. Our agitation is still on and we will continue with the hunger strike at the Students’ Centre till the authorities bow to our demands,’’ said Kang who was arrested on August 7 for gathering unlawfully outside the Vice Chancellor’s office. He, along with five other PUSU activists — Mohit Sareen, Hardeep Singh, Sarabjit Singh, Davinder Singh and Rajwinder Singh Lucky — were granted bail by a local court today. Lucky, whose condition is reported to be serious, was put on a drip in the jail.
‘‘It is ridiculous that PU authorities have termed our demands politically-motivated. Speak to any student of the University Business School (UBS) or the mathematics department, and he’ll tell you how affected he is,’’ added Kang. ‘‘Section 144, prohibiting more than four persons from gathering in a group outside the VC’s office, also needs to be immediately revoked,’’ he said.
Kang and his associates also came down heavily on the statements issued by Burail Jail Superintendent D.S. Rana that the students had been on hunger strike since August 10 and not August 7. ‘‘The reality is that we were not even taken for medical examination,’’ he said.
Earlier in the day, PUSU activists blocked the road leading to the Students’ Centre to press their demands. PUSU leaders Mann and Upkar Singh said that most of those who participated in the agitation were ‘‘non-political’’ students of UBS. ‘‘We appeal to the human rights organisations in the city to come forward and lend support to the cause,’’ said Upkar.
Meanwhile, with both PUSU and SOPU withdrawing their strike calls, regular teaching work went on in all PU departments and its affiliated colleges.
