VIT engg. students’ project may get US patent

PUNE: Final-year students of electronic and telecom engineering at the Vishvakarma Institute of Technology (VIT) have developed a project which may not only get a US patent, but also make a mark in the world of global computer graphics.

‘Voice-print as an electronic watermark for computer-based 3-D models’, is the college’s award-winning entry at Projex 2K4, a two-day project competition-cum-exhibition for engineering students, organised by the Institution of Engineers.

The project’s importance lies in the fact that watermarking for digital models, especially three-dimensional (3-D) ones, will go a long way in establishing copyright to the original designer of a 3-D object. No wonder then, that the international sponsors of this research project, Image Process Tech, Nevada, US, have applied for a patent.

“We have used an electronic approach for this watermark, instead of the usual programming algorithms,” said Parth Nilavar and Milind Choudhury, students who have worked on the project, under the guidance of A S Marathe.

The criterion for prizes at Project 2K4 is the feasibility of practical implementation of the student projects, said event convenor Y P Nearkar.

As many as 27 entries were selected in seven categories in this, the third year of the competition.

Among the notable prize-winning entries was a survey of 130 MSEB substations in the city, which exposes the shocking condition of the equipment.

It also provides a design for a high-tension sub-station on the Vidyanagari campus, Pune. It has been developed by Suhas Nehete, Praveen Jhagdale, Himanshu Gupta, Sanket Jain and Akhileshwar Shukla of the P V G college of engineering, under the guidance of Y P Nerkar.

One eye-catching model establishes the feasibility of linking the Central railway with the Konkan Railway, and has been developed by the students of the Government College of Engineering, Karad.

This project is being studied by the Union railway ministry.

Another project by the Sinhagad Institute of Technology demonstrates how toxic chromium in municipal water can be converted into a non-toxic form using bacteria and an electrical process.

A web-based fault management system developed by the students of Bharati Vidyapeeth’s women’s engineering college, also won a prize in the computers and IT category.

An instrument for the study of the mobility of ions in the atmosphere won the first prize in the instrumentation category.
