Clash of B-school entrance examination dates

It is that time of the year again when thousands of students across the country appear for a slew of entrance examinations conducted by various business schools in the country.

This year, the examinations begin on November 11 and end on January 6. Unfortunately, Symbiosis National Aptitude Test (SNAP) and ICFAI Business School Aptitude Test (IBSAT) are scheduled on the same day (December 16).

Speaking to The Hindu, Ajay Arora, Director, Triumphant Institute of Management Education, Bangalore centre, said that the clash in the dates of a few management aptitude tests is not uncommon. “I do not know what the fuss is all about. Every year, something similar happens,” he said.

Last year, the entrance exam for Faculty of Management Studies and Narsee Monjee Aptitude Test were held on the same day. “One cannot blame the institutions for the clash in dates. The best time to conduct the entrance tests is between November and January, as the students will not be over-burdened with mid-term examinations,” Mr. Arora said.

The admission cycle is such that for a programme to commence in June, the entrance test must be conducted between November and January, so that the results may be announced in April. Mr. Arora said that around 20,000 students of the country appear for the IBSAT and 18,000 to 20,000 appear for SNAP. “The question is how many of those students will appear for both the entrance tests. That group is not very big. The number of students ‘affected’ is minimal,” he said.

Statisticians can fit in anywhere

I am in my final B.Sc. (Maths, Statistics, Computer science). I would like to pursue MSc in Statistics. Please provide me the list of colleges in Hyderabad that offer the course. What are the job opportunities a statistician can expect?

Sumutra Pillai

In Hyderabad, the University of Hyderabad and Osmania University offer M.Sc. in statistics. Under Osmania University, you need to check the list of colleges offering the course. Admission to the post-graduate course is based on an entrance exam conducted by respective universities.

Statisticians find job opportunities in a number of fields. Medicine, natural and social sciences, agriculture and forestry, education, technology, industry, communications, insurance, marketing and management as well as various other sectors that constitute some of those fields. Groups sponsored by research councils also employ statisticians. Qualified statisticians may also find employment with Government departments, public and private undertakings, industrial concerns, research institutions and establishments dedicated for promotion of higher education.

The Indian Statistical Institute, with branches in many parts of the country, is a pioneering institute in the field of statistics. There is a specialised Documentation Research and Training Centre in Bangalore that employs professional statisticians. Statisticians may also take up teaching as a career or carry out academic research.

Students find CAT quite cool this year

If there is one thing predictable about the Common Admission Test (CAT), it is its unpredictability. And this time too, this entrance exam to premier management institutes lived up to its reputation.

The first surprise came when students realised each question carried four marks and one negative mark for every wrong answer, unlike one mark for right answer and 1/4th negative mark as was the norm till last year.

But this was certainly better than last year, when CAT had sprung up even more drastic changes with two and three mark questions.

CAT-2006’s duration was increased by half an hour and, contrary to popular assumption, the number of questions actually were reduced.

Instead of the standard 90 questions spread over three sections, there were only 75, 25 each testing quantitative aptitude, data interpretation and verbal abilities of over 1.9 lakh CAT aspirants across the country.

The surprises did not end there. For once, many felt the Quant (quantitative analysis) section was easier than on previous occasions. But Verbal was a bit tricky.

Fifteen of the 25 questions in this section were dedicated to reading comprehension, a time-consuming aspect of CAT.
Also the number of choices in this multiple-choice paper were increased from four to five.

“I took CAT last year too. As I didn’t perform well, I couldn’t make it to the IIMs. But this year’s CAT was more satisfying. Though the paper was shorter, there was more room for careless mistakes, there was enough time to go through the answers on the marking sheet. I think Quant was relatively simple and easy compared to other sections,” said P Nishank Reddy, an engineering graduate.

For non-Math people, Verbal was not as easy as it seemed. “Verbal was easy, but the answers were very tricky, all sounded similar.

We had to choose the most probable answer, but all were very similar in meaning, it made our choice difficult in reading comprehension,” P Shweta, a commerce graduate, said.

About 10,600 candidates took CAT across 11 centres in the city. There are 1,350 seats up for grabs in the five IIMs, and 3,000 more in other management institutes that accept CAT scores.

With CAT, starts the season of management entrance exams. CAT is followed by entrance of Indian Institute of Foreign Trade next Sunday, followed by entrances to Narsee Monjee, Mumbai, Symbiosis, Pune and ICFAI in different cities. Xavier’s Admission Test for admission to XLRI will be held in January.

IITs try his hand on Mix-Masala

MUMBAI: Go to any Business School, the chances are good for every 10 students, six have a technical background. It was a matter of time, ie for the engineering schools of this factor by setting up programs, manufacturing engineers with a degree in management.

At least that is what the Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur thought. In May of this year, the school B, a chain sandwich - BTech combined with an MBA. “Most engineers from IIT at the end of the graduation. Spotted gives us a chance,” says the dean of PK Gupta.

IIT Bombay-J Shailesh Mehta’s School of Management (SJMSOM) provides a similar program in 2007. Although dual curriculum, Clubbing Undergraduate a program with a master already exists, the discipline of cross-matching is a new feature.

For the IITs, the logic is simple. They are the best dogs in engineering schools and, over the years, the management of their schools have an enviable reputation. Merging the two is the optimal use of resources. Says Mangesh Korgaonker, head, SJMSOM “Some companies have asked us to pursue a program of this kind, so that respect for their selection must be based on a campus.”

Candidates for a two-tier level, unless you have the same threshold that students who opt for a BTech - the town rigorous Entrance Exam (JEE). The five-year programme to integrate the two streams simultaneously. At the IIT Bombay, the first two of the year will focus on engineering. In third and fourth years, the emphasis will continue to work with management organization sparse. By fifth grade, students shift gearbox and focus exclusively on management.

But how can we expect that good managers necessarily good engineers? One step. IIT Kharagpur Campus proposes the implementation of a review at the end of the first year, is not desirable, without management potential.

Caught in trap

MUMBAI: When technology breaks down at some of the finest technical institutions in the country, it’s time to worry. But when this error is corrected to ensure that students don’t suffer, the human side of technology is revealed.

After the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) conducted jointly by the seven Indian Institutes of Technology, the counselling session for allocation of streams was held from June 20 to 23.

During this session, students were counselled on the availability of seats at the seven IITs, at Benaras Hindu University and the Indian School of Mines (Dhanbad).

In this process, which is merit-based, students with a higher All-India Rank (AIR) hold a better chance of choosing their engineering stream than those with lower AIRs.

So, at the beginning of counselling, the first ranker can choose not just his stream, but even the IIT where s/he would want to pursue it. As students with lower ranks make their choice, the number of seats taken up in each stream are scored out.

While the process was smooth on days one and two, the stream-wise seats available on day three were found to be incorrect. A senior IIT official said: “The information on seats available/not available was wrong on day three (June 22).

As we did not realise that an error had been committed, the information put out at the start of day four was also wrong.”

Due to this error, IIT-Kharagpur, the nodal institute for conducting JEE-2006, has now cancelled the counselling and selection process held on days three and four. “Candidates ranked between 1601 and 5527 are required to exercise a fresh choice of courses,” say the IITs on their website.

This means that students like Trupti Bulbule, who has an AIR of 2867, will have to give a fresh choice for the streams they want to pursue. “I went for counselling on day four (June 23). All seats in IIT-Chennai and IIT-Delhi were filled up. Similarly, IIT-Mumbai and IIT-Kharagpur only had MSc courses,” she said.

But allotment of course to candidates with AIR 1-AIR 1600 under general category, all SC/ST candidates, and candidates considered under physical disability category remain unchanged, IIT officials have stated.

Students who undergo fresh counselling will have to send their choice of stream to the IIT centres by July 17. IIT officials said because of the fresh round of counselling, the first semester for first-year students would be delayed by a week.
