Course farce in Mumbai college

Free uniforms for Sarvodaya students

The Department of Education of the Government of NCT of Delhi has decided to provide free uniform to all students of classes I to IV enrolled in its Sarvodaya schools.

Education Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan on Wednesday said as per the earlier directive, this scheme was applicable subject to certain income ceilings.

Reiterating his government’s commitment to launching of “progressive” schemes for the uplift of weaker sections of the society, Mr Chauhan said under the revised norms a cash subsidy of Rs 300 would be payable to all students of primary classes of the Directorate of Education without any income ceiling. However, students of classes VI to XII would continue to receive the subsidy in accordance with the income ceiling.

Bill for Common Univs Act to be passed

The much-awaited Common Universities Act (CUA) will be passed in March. The Act had led to a lot of speculation in the universities in the state, especially among the elected representatives to various bodies like senate and syndicates.

Education minister Anandiben Patel on Friday said that the draft of the Bill was ready. “It will be passed by the Assembly in March,” Patel said.

The Bill had raised a lot of speculation amongst university circles, and its probable contents had generated a lot of interest. The anxiety was most amongst elected representatives, who were wondering about their status if the new Act gets implemented.

Patel, who was in the city to speak about the achievements of her ministry during the last five years, added that the Kutch University would also formally come into existence soon and start conducting examinations. “This has been a long standing demand from the region and will be fulfilled,” she said.

Patel informed that the land acquisition for the university has already been done. “For the purpose of infrastructure, we have allocated Rs 30 crore,” she said, adding that the Dharamsinh Desai Institute of Technology (DDIT) was expected to get the deemed university status in March.

Commenting on the new plans in higher education, she said that four memoranda of understanding has been signed for new courses by the department.

“The new courses would include two marine engineering courses and a course in port management.

This will be done in collaboration with the Nirma University and Adani Ports,” she said.

She added that the L D Engineering College at Ahmedabad would start two new courses in January 2004.

This would include degree courses in automobile engineering and bio-medical engineering. The minister added that the department was also taking steps to start new courses in the disciplines biotechnology, computer engineering as well as electronics and communications engineering.

Commenting on the ongoing controversy regarding the excess fee charged by some self-financed colleges in Gujarat University, she said that the first instalment of the excess fee had been returned to the students. “We will give the second instalment in the next couple of days,” she said.
