The society of Plastics Engineers honored 15 SPE Senior Members during the 2001 ANTEC by designating them Fellows of the Society. Last month, we profiled eight of the honorees; here are the remaining seven.
Dr. Shau-Tarng Lee, director, Research & Development, Sealed Air Corporation, Saddle Brook, New Jersey, received this honor for his effort to make foam more environmentally sound. Dr. Lee developed carbon dioxide as the sole blowing agent for thick and special application PE foam products. He developed a carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon foaming agent mixture to improve the safety status of hydrocarbon foam extrusion operations, and to reduce hydrocarbon emissions. His development of HCFC-22 to replace CFC-12 for PE foam extrusion and thus reduce ozone depletion allowed Sealed Air to remain a producer of environmentally friendly foams. He introduced volatile ethane as the blowing agent to replace butane and propane for low-density PE foam sheets. Dr. Lee observed shear effects on nucleation for foam-enhanced devolatilization in batch experiments. From this, foam die design technology was greatly improved by the balanced consideration of rheology and foaming. A member of the Society since 1983, Dr. Lee is affilia ted with the Palisades Section and the Thermoplastic Materials & Foams Division of SPE. Costas Gogos and Elliott L. Weinberg sponsored him. He holds seven patents and has several pending, edited Foam Extrusion: Principles and Practices, has contributed nearly 70 technical articles on foam, and has presented seminars both in the U.S. and in Taipei. He received a bachelor of engineering degree in industrial chemistry from National Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan, and a master’s degree in engineering and PhD from Stevens Institute of Technology.
Peter G. Pape, retired associate industry scientist, Dow Coming Corporation, Midland, Michigan, was recognized for using the chemistry of silane coupling agents and the unique properties of silicone polymers to make improvements in plastics materials. Since fiberglass-reinforced plastics are neither very strong nor durable without coupling agents, it has been Mr. Pape’s work to optimize silane technology for each specific application to give improved physical properties, increased environmental resistance, high temperature resistance, and improved electrical properties. In applications to glass-reinforced epoxy printed circuit boards, which affect calculators, cell phones, and computers, his work solved the industry’s concern with interfacial failure in making defect-free components. He introduced new ultrahigh-molecular weight silicone additives to thermoplastics, which improve lubrication, abrasion resistance, surface appearance, and processing. He is responsible for the commercialization of the Sioplas[R] process, which uses the moisturereactivity of silanes to crosslink thermoplastics with water. This allows the use of simple and low-cost extrusion lines, and has led to more versatile formulations of wire and cable, heat-resistant pipe, film, foam and other crosslinked products. A member of the Society since 1983, Mr. Pape is affiliated with the Mid-Michigan Section and the Polymer Modifiers & Additives Division of SPE. Ernest A. Coleman and David Riley were his sponsors. He has presented or published 70 technical papers, book chapters, and encyclopedia articles, and lectured at short courses on adhesion and coupling agents. He holds a BS in chemistry and mathematics from Alma College, an MS in organic chemistry from The Ohio State University, with additional graduate studies at Michigan State University and Saginaw Valley State University.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Snehalata Deshmukh’s proposal to grant a two-year extension to M S Kambli as professor-cum-director of Institute of Distance Education was not fully accepted by the Mumbai University Management Council on Thursday. Instead, MC members decided to appoint Kambli as an Officer on Special Duty at IDE for one year till a suitable candidate is selected for the post. Thursday’s meeting had mentioned the V-C’s proposal to grant an extension-in-service to Kambli as IDE’s professor-cum-director for a period of two years. However, Kambli has already crossed the age of superannuation ie 60 years, on April 5, 1998. The proposal was amended and MC members were requested to consider the proposal for allowing Kambli as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) for a year from May 1. The V-C said the varsity will advertise and select a proper candidate for the post. Senate member Amarjit Singh Manhas had earlier written to Chancellor Dr P C Alexanderpointing out several instances of flouting rules in connection with Kambli’s proposed extension. Deshmukh did not wish to talk about the matter as the Management Council meetings are confidential. But sources admit that Kambli had been appointed as an OSD. Manhas said: “I am happy with the MC’s decision as it has ensured that deserving academicians have a chance to try for the director’s post whenever advertises for .”

After two years nail-biting, management and engineering students are finally breathing easy. India Inc is back on campus and is absorbed nearly 50 percent more students than any other during the last year.
Enterprise Information Technology (IT) sector, banks and financial services, industry and services are the largest employment agency.
Tata Consultancy Services, for example, plans to recruit 4000 students in MBA and engineering schools, compared to 2500 last year. Engineering major Larsen & Toubro requirements increased by 600 to 800 students this year.
However, Pay-packets are not negligible. Back 12 months, and the stage in the university campus was quite different.
“ During the last year, we were to require companies on campus to come, this year they Come Knocking,’’said Abbasali Gabula, chairperson, external relations, SP Jain Institute of Management and Research. Although the SP Jain official courses will begin in the first week of February, they have already been approached by 80 companies.
Ditto for Gurgaon-based Management Development Institute (MDI). “ Last year, 45 companies were on campus, but this year, 105 companies have shown interest,’’said Dr. Pritam Singh, director, MDI.
Walk in IIT Powai’s make-do canteen, coffee-Shack, and the variation in students’ mood is sensitive. He is happy, relaxed faces compared with the nervous, frightened of last year.
“ The number of nuclear industry (manufacturing), who come to campus this year is higher. Otherwise, the large computer companies have been recruiting,’’says Professor Gupta NC, PROFI-In-Charge of placement, IIT, Bombay.
“ I had to appear for seven rounds of interviews, but I finally received my dream company ITC,’’smiles IITian BTech (electric) Nalin Agrawal student. With a package of Rs 7 lakh per year under his belt, he has reason to rejoice. Nearly half are already batchmates its meeting of the plum jobs, while 30% want higher studies.
The dotcom boom of 2000 has been a dream for a period of MBA students and engineering schools, most of whose students receive two to three job offers. The party’s degree a year later, it was difficult to maintain, even as many have been dismissed.
