A group of Indian journalists on a recent visit to Germany

Consistency, patience, hard work and high quality engineers and engineering are products of what Germany as a brand is synonymous with India. It is a tribute to this culture very well known that Germany and for building bridges between the two countries for decades in various areas - especially in the fields of science and technology, have led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Max Planck Society (MPS) in Germany and the Department of Science and Technology, India.

Under the agreement recently signed during the visit of German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in India, 15 scholarships are awarded to monitor Indian scientists, Post-Doc-studies in different Max Planck Institute (MPI) in Germany.

A group of Indian journalists on a recent visit to Germany was informed that there were about 78 MPIs of Germany, with two others in the pipeline. You have an annual budget of 1.3 billion euros and, in general, focus on different high-end research in the fields of science and social sciences. The research institutes, teachers in different varsities in Germany.

It is interesting to note that an agreement was signed four years ago between the Association of Indian universities and the German Rectors’ Conference to identify other degrees. This means that if a student has his Bachelor of India here on a particular topic, he or she can go Bachelor and Master in Germany, there is a problem, because the level is recognized in this country.

According to one report, while the number of Indian students were 609 in 1990, the number has shot in 4112 for the years 2003-04. The Germans have their system more flexible, so that “English” such as those of students from India can easily customize your system by introducing more than 300 international studies programs, which offer mostly masters in addition to the Bachelor and Ph E Programs, said the report. Although several courses are specially designed for international students, particularly in the level of hotel or master level of technology, the fact remains that we in Germany, on a daily basis, a person needs a smattering of the local language get by. It is perhaps a good idea to submit to intensive courses in french on different Max Müller Bhavans in India

Deutscheland beckons.

Consistency, patience, hard work and high-quality engineers and engineering goods are what Germany as a brand stands for an Indian. It’s a tribute to this very culture that Germany is known for and the building of bridges between the two countries over decades in various fields - especially in science and technology that have resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Max Planck Society (MPS) of Germany and the Department of Science and Technology, India.

Under the MoU signed recently during the visit of the German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder to India, 15 fellowships will be awarded to Indian scientists to pursue post-doctoral studies in the various Max Planck Institutes (MPI) in Germany.

A group of Indian journalists on a recent visit to Germany were informed that there were about 78 MPIs in Germany with two more in the pipeline. They have an annual budget of Euro 1.3 bn and normally focus on various high-end research in the fields of science and social sciences. Scientists with the institutes teach at the various varsities in Germany.

Interestingly, an MoU was signed four years ago between the Association of Indian Universities and the German Rectors’ Conference to recognise each other’s degrees. This means, if an Indian student does his bachelor’s here in a particular subject, he or she can go and study master’s in Germany, without facing a problem, as the degree is recognised in that country.

According to a report, while the number of Indian students were 609 in 1990, the figure has shot up to 4,112 for the year 2003-04. The Germans have made their system more flexible so that ‘anglophone’ students such as those from India can adjust easily to their system, by introducing over 300 international degree programmes, which offer mainly master’s courses in addition to the bachelor’s and Ph D programmes, says the report. Although several courses are tailor-made for international students, especially at the management degree level or the master’s in technology level, the fact remains that to get on in Germany, on a daily basis, a person does need a smattering of the local language to get by. It may be a good idea to undergo crash courses in German at the various Max Mueller Bhavans in India.

As of now in Germany, the tuition fees are not charged, even for international students in most varsities, as they are publicly-funded. This may, of course, change in the future. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with its offices in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai offers scholarships to deserving students. Their website is www.daaddelhi.org - for those who wish to log in. As Europe is generally expensive, the living costs could amount to between Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000 per month.

By the year 2010, Germany will change its higher education to the globally more popular bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes, moving away from the current diploma system.

The technical university at Munich offers many dual-degrees, which can be procured even in Singapore. It offers these degrees jointly with the National University of Singapore. These include master’s in financial mathematics and risk control; master’s in intelligent transportation systems and one in industrial chemistry. GRE or GMAT scores are required in addition to TOEFL or IELTS for English. The courses conducted in Singapore will require payment of tuition fees. Log on to www.gist.edu.sg for details.

Indian students who have recently arrived in Munich to pursue further studies after doing an M Tech in various Indian Institutes of Technology said they found the atmosphere in Munich pleasant and that they had got adjusted to the cold weather quite easily.

The Humboldt university, which is amongst the oldest and prestigious German universities is known for the outstanding quality of programmes at various levels. Many senior politicians including former prime minister of India, Chandra Shekhar have studied here. It’s safest to apply by the end of March for the session starting in October. GRE and TOEFL results are accepted.
