Chennai: “Rethinking approaches to the provision of public services” has been the centre of a recent workshop held in Chennai, a thorough examination of the Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
The demonstration by more than 60 delegates from non-governmental organizations, governments and the private sector, was organized by the Round Table on public expenditure, in collaboration with the Institute of Management Consultants (India) and the Department of Management Studies University of Madras. With the emphasis on good governance and fiscal responsibility, the organization has produced a number of suggestions and ideas.
The event included a technical meeting dedicated to the idea of certification as a prerequisite for some public projects more effective. The workshop also agreed on improving the Rural Employment Guarantee Act. For example, a panel discussion with Venkat Chary, former Additional Chief Secretary Government of Maharashtra, has suggested that “all administrative apparatus must be ready before the law is applied.” This would facilitate the integration of action with other development programmes and ensure, staff and officials of panchayats have been well trained.
Equally important was to ensure that beneficiaries of the law are well informed and encouraged to claims officials at all levels of communication, such as awareness campaigns and the media.
In addition, discussion is recommended strong links and consultation with governments.

The Association of International Education in science, economics and entertainment (AIESEC), the world’s largest student-Run Organization has a network of more than 30000 students from 800 universities, is the organization of a conference on the theme “Leadership Development” in clubs Sterling to Puri, Orissa. The National Leadership Development Seminar (NLDS), September 22 to 27, in the presence of 300 students from 11 cities in India.
The objective of the conference is where the qualities of leadership among the delegates and inculcate values, to facilitate the effective use of these qualities. The conference aims to promote the development of certain basic skills - the presentation, sales, planning and inter-personal skills, students receiving secure housing in career management and other areas.

The north-western regional convention of university teachers’ associations, organised by the committee for the formation of All India Federation of University Teachers Association (AIFUTA) at the University Business School today, reiterated the need for greater accountability and autonomy in university affairs.
Delegates from teacher associations of various universities of the north-western region participated in the convention. The aims, structure and functions of the proposed AIFUTA were also discussed. Speakers reiterated the need for greater autonomy from political and bureaucratic pressures and also decided to submit proposals for structural reforms in the university system.
The convention was organised as a part of the preparatory convention for a national convention to be organised on December 28-29.

LAKHNAU: Directors of five Indian Institute of Management (IIMS), scheduled for Friday at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIM-L).

The Institute of Management in Kerala (IMK) is organising a one-day national seminar on ‘Product patents and their impact on Indian pharmaceutical industry and bio-informatics’ here on Friday.
Dr R. Manavalan, Professor and Head, Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology, Annamalai University, will give a presentation on ‘Introduction to product patents and IPR, emergence of bio-informatics.’
Among those who will join him subsequently are Dr Elizabeth Varkey, intellectual property rights expert and Advocate, High Court of Kerala; Dr Achyutsankar Nair, Director, Centre for Bio-informatics, University of Kerala; and Dr N.K. Jayakumar, Professor and Head, Department of Law, University of Kerala.
The seminar is intended for students, corporate delegates, research scholars and faculty of the pharmacy, management and law streams, said Dr K.S. Chandrasekar, Organising convenor.

KOCHI: Dr N. Unnikrishnan Nair, Vice-Chancellor of the Cochin University of Science and Technology, has inaugurated the Winter School on Diagnosis and Management of Diseases in Mariculture at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute.
As many as 28 delegates from various institutes under ICAR and State Agricultural Universities are participating in this programme.
The Winter School will conclude on November 27, a release said.

NEW DELHI: A two-day conference called “Destination Uttar Pradesh 2005,” is aimed at investors, which will be held on Thursday. The conference was organised by the BIS Development Council and the Birla Institute of Management Technology.
More than 20 NRIs, venture capitalists and India, more than 100 companies and large enterprises attended the conclave.
