As the number of suspected SARS patients are increasing in neighbouring India, Bangladesh is taking precautionary measures to tackle any possible outbreak of the deadly disease in the country. After Sunday’s Kolkata panic, two more SARS patients were found in Indian- one again in Kolkata and the other in Bombay.
The authorities have decided to turn the Haji Camp, which remain empty for almost nine months empty round the year, into a temporary hospital to quarantine the suspected cases of the deadly flu- like pneumonia– Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)–in the country.
Earlier, WHO officials said that a SARS epidemic in Indian and Bangladesh would be catastrophic because of the high population density.
Health Ministry and DG Health sources said today that quarantine facilities for up to 50 patients would be made available in the Haji Camp, which is located at a walking distance from the Zia International Airport (ZIA).
Anyone showing symptoms of the disease on arrival at ZIA and other entry points will be moved to quarantine at Haji Camp within the possible quickest time, an official of the health ministry said.
Earlier, the government had earmarked a separate room in the Institute of Chest Diseases at Mohakhali for emergency quarantine and planned to rent a house if the situation aggravates under any circumstances. However, no positive case of SARS has yet to be proved in the country.
“We have further intensified vigilance and checks at all the entry points across the country especially after detection of a fatal SARS case in next door West Bengal state of India on Saturday,” Additional Director General of the Health Directorate Prof. Dr. Sultana Jahan told BSS over telephone.
Dr. Sultana said medical teams comprising four members each have been sent for some less important entry points– air, sea and lands ports- where quarantine measures were not taken earlier.
She also said that more special medical squads would be developed through SARS prevention training at home and abroad soon to face the challenge.
