The commissionerate, with jurisdiction over seven districts from Thrissur to Kasaragod in the State, Mahe of Pondicherry and Lakshadweep, contributed Rs 250.77 crores in central excise and Rs. 71.66 crores in service tax to the exchequer in 2003-04.
The release said this was an achievement, considering that tariff rates were reduced for cotton yarn and steel products. Also a few units, such as Hindustan Coca-Cola, were closed down.
