Pune, May 30 - 02 June 2003: Information allows women

The International Conference on women through information and knowledge: the oral traditions of ICT in the context of green Mahindra United World College of India in Paud, Pune, provided a rich diversity of ideas and experiences . The conference was a unique opportunity for scientists, researchers and information professionals, politicians and activists to meet and interact. It was a chance of over 120 participants from 21 states of India and 17 international delegates from 13 countries for the exchange of ideas and contribute to the development of communication networks.

The important intellectual and creative contributions have been very challenging and provide a strong synergy of ideas. The prospects that emerge from different disciplines, starting with the social sciences, information technology, Women’s Studies, literature, technology, domestic science, management, studies of culture, library and information science, Education and several other allied fields reference to new areas of research, Action, training - and networking. In addition, the presentation focused on a number of techniques and strategies of communication and transmission of information and knowledge about the limits of time and space. It is traditional modes of the hearing, the mass media as newspapers, radio, television and electronic media emerging.

During the 3 day conference, participants were with four plenary meetings (including a round table), 15 concurrent sessions and five academic workshops. In addition to the rich intellectual feast, proposed that these meetings, witness extraordinary cultural programmes, exhibitions and participated in interactive discussions in a pleasant environment.

Welcome to participants, Professor Harsha Parekh, professor of library and librarian at the University SNDT Women’s University said that the Conference was born of the longstanding cooperation between the two institutions, namely the SNDT Women University, Mumbai and the Centre for Women Development Studies (CWDS), New Delhi. Both institutions have rendered invaluable services to strengthen the role of women. SNDT has, since its inception in 1916, wanted self-determination of women through education, research and development and maintaining its mission, locked up in its slogan that says “women is a source of power infinite “(paradise Sanskrita STREE Shakti) While CWDS tried, for power and equality between women (known in its watchword Samya Shakti) through research, lobbying, political intervention and documentation.

Prof. Rupa Shah, rector of the SNDT Women’s University and is characterized by several delegates opened the conference by lighting the traditional lamp. In his inaugural address, said Shah, as the dissemination of knowledge through ICT was quickly societies.Tracing growth and development efforts of women’s participation in the country, she said, the role of men such as Mahatma Gandhi and the Maharshi Karve women of their state of the “slimming” to “empowerment”.
