With regard to cultural heritage and culture has to do with economic growth, employment or computing today scenario? All indications Vinod Daniel, Head of Research, Australian Museum, Sydney.
The museum Kachchh Gujarat is probably the oldest in India, more than 150 years. Today, all the ruins of the ancient stone structure after the disastrous earthquake of 2001 is a first floor very precarious “split, that each minute. But it does not natural disasters underline the grim truth: heritage cultural lies on the ground uncertain and could be easily with debris.
“A major development problems that the world would begin the same, unless cultural issues are educated and some distinctive character is made to each culture,” says Vinod Daniel, director of the Research Unit, Australian Museum, Sydney. Daniel was recently in Chennai, opening a certificate, of course, in the field of sustainable management of heritage with IIT Madras, on behalf AusHeritage, Australia-Network for Cultural Heritage, which he national chair.
The certificate, of course, in the field of sustainable management of heritage focuses on the design of buildings for the collection of comfort. “Very often, buildings restored or renovated for human comfort. There is not much information on how to do something for the collection of comfort. So the focus of this project, it was in the process of architects, engineers and others to understand the special needs of Collections and what you can do a building for the conservation of collections for future generations. ”
A major project, he said, I have tried to limit the use of toxic chemicals to kill insects. Less harmful than an inert nitrogen gas is used.
“We are studying the possibilities liabilities, automatic air-conditioning, museums where buildings are not air-conditioned, but there is a veranda open, so that temperature variations have no influence on the collections inside.”
Daniel cites several reasons why the preservation of culture should be parallel to the growth and development.
“If companies are creating art to play a very important part, especially in the information technology economy today, as well as in the tourism sector. The cultural sector is probably one of the largest Employers in many cities, there are still certainly a direct benefit to the economy. ”
Singapore, for example, he said, recognized that they have lost much of their ancient culture of modernization, and are now measures to preserve what they have. By the same token, India also has a “golden opportunity” as it is also a rich legacy of the past.
This awareness, AusHeritage has taken a number of projects for this year, including the preparation of an agreement with INTAC (Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage) for Australia and India to work their efforts on conservation and development of a certificate, of course, on preventive conservation at the University of Delhi and the National Institute Museum. To be fair, it is probable risk anticipation, the collections are displayed and “appropriate measures to minimise any future damage.”
At the top of the list of these risks are insects, disasters, changes in temperature and humidity, too light, vandalism or human, natural disasters, water and fire. “If you design a building, do everything possible to minimize these things. It is a matter of approaching risk analysis in which you are most at risk, in this case, insects , Disasters and human problems are greatest. Then Question is seeking a solution, “says Daniel.
While India has managed to cope with all these questions? “Unfortunately, international cultural heritage has low priority. The scenario has not changed much - education, health and the fight against poverty are all higher priorities. It is the same everywhere. So, we must emphasize how culture contributes to other areas, such as benefit tourism, which means employment. So the greatest challenge for the cultural heritage, to make sure you motivate, such as culture helps d ‘ other things … so that you not only preserve the culture, “says Daniel.
To this end, in AusHeritage joint efforts with ASEAN countries, the concept of mapping cultural diversity with the ASEAN countries.
Expaining the process, he said, “Mapping culture is, in principle, with the community to conserve what is important, that their culture. So, like many, you have the monumental Taj in Agra, it is possible that other sites / monuments villages and small towns of historical importance of knowledge that may at the Community of the Region-smoker. They participated in the implementation of this know-how in conservation, regardless of taking charge of tourism, there is also a sense of identity and responsibility for the community, “he says.
