Samford University’s Brock School of Business is changing the schedule of its evening MBA program.
The graduate program - taken often by working professionals - is being revamped into two semesters that are nine weeks each with a 10-week summer semester, the school reported Thursday.
The program used to have five, nine-week terms in a year.
Under the new schedule, each course will meet for a two-hour class each week, giving students more time to study and learn the material, school officials said.
“We have retained the flexibility and convenience for working professionals through the option of attending one evening a week,” said Larry Harper, director of Graduate and Executive Education Programs at the Brock School of Business in a news release. “In addition, students can complete the degree in as little as 12 months by attending full-time or 22 months by attending part-time.”
The new curriculum covers all business functions and is designed to offer a more complete general management experience. Students also learn to exercise ethical business practices.
“Managers need comprehensive skills and sound values in order to achieve the disparate goals of their investors, customers, employees and the public at large,” said Beck A. Taylor, dean of the Brock School of Business. “At the Brock School, our charge is to help current and aspiring managers to discover solutions that meet these goals.”
The evening MBA program is the oldest in the state of Alabama and takes applications year round. Students can enter the program in January, June and August.

Degree.com, a website focusing on online degree programs and distance learning education, had 38 percent more visitors during April-May 2008 compared to February-March 2008, after adjusting for seasonal differences. In an informal survey of site visitors, the #1 reason for being interested in an online degree was “higher gas prices,” cited by 60 percent of those responding in May 2008. Other reasons given were convenience, parking, scheduling, babysitting and the cost of classes In a comparable 2007 survey of visitors to Degree.com, the number 1 reason for interest in an online degree was “convenience,” with gas prices not even mentioned when the top five reasons were compiled. The surveys used a fill-in-the-blanks format rather than multiple choice, to increase the reliability of respondents’ answers.
“Gas is costing people upwards of $1000 a month,” says Sheila Danzig, who runs the Degree.com site. “And students are the last group who can afford that. Taking classes at home and other distance learning options allow students to avoid spending limited funds on gas and to have more time for a part-time job that helps pay the tuition bill. For the adult learner, online degree programs provide a perfect answer to a scarcity of time and resources, particularly for those who also work and have a family.”

Thiruvananthapuram: In a bid to promote use of administrative Malayalam work, the Kerala government will reward its employees handling files by using “lucid and simple” Malayalam entries with good service and special awards.
“This forms part of the process of introducing Malayalam language as the administrative departments in all within the next four years,” Information Minister Hassan told a press meet here.
“Promoting Administrative Malayalam language as is for people’s convenience. This involves no language fanaticism. English will continue to be used in matters where it is required like correspondence with the central government.”
Making the administrative Malayalam language would not be at odds with e-governance, thanks to the software developed by agencies like the Centre for development of Imaging Technology, he said.
Training programs for employees on use of office as Malayalam language, now solely conducted by the Institute of Management in Government in the state capital, would be held at regional levels in Kochi and Kozhikode.
This year’s Malayalam Week celebrations would be held from 1 to 7 November with seminars and cultural programmes here, he added.
