Education Times, in an interview with Arindham Chaudhuri, Dean, Centre for Economic Research & Advanced Studies at the Indian Institute of Planning & Management, New Delhi, (IIPM) to know his vision for education.
What are your views on government policy on education in India?
It is a total confusion on government initiatives in education before. Nobody knows what has been done until today, and what we must do more. Indeed, nothing has been achieved, if one is to believe that only 34 percent of the population to read and write in the country. I feel NGOs can play an important role in educating India.
Can you shed light on the management courses that you propose?
IIPM is a university research institute and therefore proposes that two management courses for students in one level Undergraduate - Bachelor of Business Administration and the other at both postgraduate - Master in Business Administration (MBA ). At the heart of the CWB and MBA programs is about national economic planning. The most important thing is that students in the CWB IIPM, after two years working in industry, are automatically with the MBA-closing. This means students from the CCB at a stage where further MBA program.
IIPM programs are recognized?
We have an agreement with the International Management Institute (IMI), Belgium, which is one of the world’s leading Business Schools. Thus, students receive their diplomas and degrees of IIPM IMI. IIPM management programs are not within the competence of the IAU, AICTE, UGC and other national institutions. Students in Delhi and Mumbai campus have the opportunity to transfer their credits to IMI Belgium and continuing their studies there.Besides, BBA, MBA, Executive Education scholarships and programs of the IIPM alongwith Gota programs are run by organizations such as the United Nations (Geneva), World Bank, ILO, Nestle SA, Vevey, INSEAD, IMD Lausanne, Credit Suisse, among other things, that some of the highest standards in the field of hotel .

Acquiring a foreign degree is a cherished desire of large number of Indian students. However, due to several formalities involved and more importantly financial constraints several potential students are left out of the race.
With a vision to provide quality education at an affordable price, Ansal Institute of Technology (AIT), Gurgaon was established in the year 2000. According to the director of the institute, M P Singh, “Our motive was to start a world class institute offering quality education in various professional areas.”
The institute is presently offering Bachelor’s programmes in computer science, and management in association with the Coastal Carolina University (CCU), United States (US); Bachelor’s in Computer Information Systems from Tarleton State University, US; and Bachelor’s in Engineering with Clemson University, US.
Singh said: “We are offering these programmes in tie-up with the leading universities of the US, to fulfil the aspirations of young students who might otherwise find it difficult to pursue studies in the US due to financial constraints. Our programmes exposes them to the education, training, laws, culture, and social fabric of the US.”
The distinct feature of these programmes is that a student undergoes first two-three years of study at AIT and the rest at the US. The curriculum taught at AIT is the same as of the affiliate university.
“The course outline and credentials of the faculty members are sent to the respective universities for approval but we function fairly independent. Students evaluation is done by us,” says he.
AIT is furthermore offering Bachelor of Computer Application and Bachelor of Business Administration of the GGSIPU. Starting with this year, the institute will offer ‘BS in Business Administration with a major in Resort Tourism Management’ of CCU.
The four-year programme aspires to prepare students for career in management and entrepreneurship in the hotel and tourism sectors. According to Singh, “The unique feature of this programme is that it will provide paid internship to the students in Delhi and US.”
In addition, AIT is planning to introduce courses in Biotechnology and Architecture in near future. An additional building of AIT is presently under construction for the same purpose. When asked as to why AIT is diversifying into various disciplines rather than concentrating on few, Singh says, “We need to concentrate on the emerging career disciplines, otherwise we will stagnate. We want to fulfil the needs of the students from larger interest area.”
Speaking about his future plans for the institute Singh says, “Our major focus would be on Engineering, Management, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, and hospitality. We would be perhaps first in the country to offer BS in Bioinformatics. Our next step would be to start MBA with the US.”
For enrolling into US MBA programme one needs 16 years of formal education, whereas Indian students after completing their Bachelors acquire 15 years of education. AIT will provide a bridge course for such students as well. The institute will facilitate the placement of the successful students. Hostel facility is available for both girls and boys. Admissions are on.
