Wis. lawmakers take steps to scale back tuition benefits program for veterans

Lawmakers have moved to scale back tuition benefits once lauded as some of the nations most generous to veterans, saying they proved far more popular and costly than expected.

The state Legislatures budget committee voted 16-0 last week to approve changes to the benefits, including eliminating a promise of free graduate school tuition for veterans and setting a limit on how much time they would have to apply.

The changes would take effect if approved by the entire legislature and Gov. Jim Doyle, who will consider them as part of his budget this summer. They would leave the program underfunded by millions of dollars, forcing universities and technical colleges to cover shortfalls by raising tuition or making cuts.

Research may yield improved treatment for diseased lungs

A multi-institutional team of engineers, scientists and clinicians from the University of Wisconsin-Madison will study large-artery biomechanics that could play a role in heart failure in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Patients who have the disease may have narrowed, thickened pulmonary arteries in which scar tissue accumulates, blood flow is blocked and tiny blood clots form. There are treatments, but no cure, for pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Naomi Chesler, a UW-Madison assistant professor of biomedical engineering, is leading the project, which is supported by roughly $2 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. She says the research team hopes to create improved diagnostic tools that enable them to track stiffening of large and small arteries and link these measurements with impaired ventricular function

Duke Probe Shows Failure of Post-Enron Ethics Classes (Update2)

The cheating episode at Duke University may cause academics to conclude the post-Enron emphasis on teaching ethics in graduate business schools is a failure.

Thirty-four first-year masters of business administration students at Dukes Fuqua School of Business were disciplined in the programs largest cheating scandal. Nine students face expulsion for collaborating on a take-home test, violating the professors rules.

Business students are more likely to cut corners than those in any other academic discipline, several studies show. A Rutgers University survey last year found that cheating at business schools is common, even after ethics courses were added following scandals that bankrupted Enron Corp. and WorldCom Inc.
