The Government believes that investments in institutions of higher education and research and development are as important as investment in physical capital and physical infrastructure.
What we need, world-class universities, and there must be a beginning to an institution. We need a university is a place next to Cambridge or Oxford and Harvard and Stanford.
I am pleased that the Assembly know that we have selected the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, which enjoys a good reputation as a centre of excellence in research and development. We will ensure that IISc, in a few years, a world-class university. I suggest, for an additional amount of Rs 100 crore a grant for this purpose ”
– Palaniappan Chidambaram, Minister of Finance Union, Feb. 28, 2005
This brief, but as regards the IISc May, the famous “Jewel of Bangalore” into the limelight, but once again for thousands of students and professors of science and technology, a graduate of the sylvan want and greenery of the Institute, IISc and is of particular importance - an importance as a leading institution not only in India but also overseas.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that almost IISc began the spirit of scientific research not only in southern India, but the entire sub-continent.
While the first efforts in the creation of the Institute was certainly the Jamsetji Tata, it was the report of a committee, headed by Jamsetji Tata, saw at the time Secretary of State for India, Lord Curzon (an Etonian himself), an active interest and support for Noble Prize winners Sir William Ramsay (the discoverer of noble gases like neon), to identify an ideal location for the future Institute for the Advancement ” Originally investigations in all areas of learning and to take advantage of India. ”
Sir Ramsay’s opinion acceptance of Bangalore. With the support of the court of Mysore - the Wodeyars munificent a grant of 372 hectares, the Indian Institute of Science was on the path of reality.
The first part of the way students have been admitted again in 1911 after the Maharaja of Mysore, Shri Krishnarajendra Wodeyar, has laid the groundwork. Currently, the Institute is 443 hectares of land in the city, more green space in a city whose infrastructure to burst the seams!
The creation of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the year 1956 saw the Institute grant, as the university.
Thus, although some of India, which in the field of science and technology have been in contact with the Institute of India alongside its own Noble laureates Sir CV Raman. Others include Prof. JC Ghosh and Satish DHAWAN - one of the men contributed to India to take to the Final Frontier space.
In addition, Sir CV Raman was the first director of the Indian Institute of registration during the year 1933, but Homi Bhabha was a volunteer assistant at the Institute only a year ago. The Institute of stock plan services of volunteers, the father of modern India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the manufacturer of modern Karnataka, Sir M Vishveswaraya and JRD Tata.
So what is it that IISc is among his fellow age? An obvious answer would sweat and boredom of its faculty and its students is what it is today. Professor Goverdhan Mehta, director of the IISc in place, said that there are a few little things that contribute to a world-class institution.
“An institution, an environment conducive to creativity and excellence thrive. We were able to do so, we have a good atmosphere for the faculty and students interact. Our advantage is also conditioned by the because we anticipated the possibility of cross-disciplinary interaction, “he adds.
Another advantage, said Professor Mehta, the Institute enjoys the wealth is intellectual capital of excellence with several heads. Although Professor Mehta is very satisfied with the generosity of the FM, he believes that such funding should not be used to award only once, but on a sustainable basis.
“We need the equipment must be updated regularly. The physical infrastructure on campus must be improved. New concepts in buildings are safe and energy efficient buildings, and should be integrated in our physical infrastructure” , He adds.
In addition, while preparing the budget is around Rs 150 crore according to RS 160 crore is virtually hunger salary compared to what institutions such as Stanford and manage. The Stanford Management Company, an enterprise of the University of planning, indeed, manages both the physical and financial assets with a value of $ 10 billion (estimated Rs 44000 crore).
Stanford Foundation assets, consolidate and manage common (the new entity called the Foundation Pool), has an annualized return of 15.1 percent compared to a 10 years, so Stanford’s MEP one of the best performers of all Report of college and university foundations, according to a report from the company Cambridge Consulting Associates.

For all those self-flagellation in India on the results of their higher education, not a single Indian university among the top-100 institutions in the world, after a last survey in 2004 by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Institute of Higher Education.
Not that China costs better. You do not have in the Top-100-be, and there is less than a half-dozen Asian institutions in the World 100 14 University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, 21, 54 Osaka University, University of Moscow in 66th Hebrew University of Jerusalem and 90 position withdraws the world.
The world is dominated by institutions of the American brand, Harvard, Stanford and the occupation of two positions, and Cambridge (3) and Oxford (7) an interruption of the USA’s monopoly of the Top-10. Seventeen of 20 American universities, indicating that, despite the recent decline in foreign students in the USA, universities, higher education remains an American stamp.
But the Chinese have clearly self-criticism of the list with a view to improving their own university system, in accordance with their stated national priority from 100 of their universities in the world-class facilities, a goal which is not even discussed, let alone India.
Indeed, India lugubrement rates even among the top 100 universities in Asia, with only Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT Kharagpur, and the University of Calcutta, which is included on the list. Asia is dominated by the list of institutions in Japan, South Korea and Australia, with a smattering of China and Israeli institutions.
The criteria for classification in the list and graduated from the Faculty of winning Nobel prizes and medals, international research courses in 21 broad categories of discussion and articles published in journals such as Nature and Science.
With the classification of the collection and India live in poverty in the presence of him, India should have the force of sheer numbers of their students and the inevitable excellence of the creamy layer of these huge figures.
While the Indian media ravens on the flight students the USA has proved that the Chinese are celebrating a decline in demand in the USA as a sign of its success in strengthening national institutions.
Nearly 80000 Indian students came to the USA last year for higher education, so that the largest contingent from any country. Participants in the Chinese market, less than 62,000.

Are genetic defects, cancer, epilepsy, deafness, blindness, diseases of the brain or even infertility different from the Indian population, compared to other population groups? It is a matter of several researchers in Bangalore, trying to meet its work on the forefront of the field of genomics.
Finding answers could pave the way for early diagnosis, prevention and treatment of various diseases. One of the largest research efforts being done outside the city is in the field of genetics of cancer. Entitled “New targets for the treatment of cancer with the approach of genomics and proteomics” research is a cooperative effort cancer screening, researchers throughout the world “to decipher the genetic changes that occur during the birth and cancer progression.
The leadership of the Indian Institute of Science bio-chemistry professor MRS Rao, the study looks at the genetics of different types of cancer, in order to find likely targets of the drug fight against the disease. One of important discoveries that came near the study is the discovery of a new gene ‘X’ in India patients who can help clinicians days on the development of brain illness.
The Indian Institute of Science Researchers also new types of defects for Indians BRCA1, one of two genes linked with breast cancer, according to the first study ever on gene therapy in India.
“Our data from 14 families suggests a prevalence lower, but the participation of germ-line mutations in the BRCA1 gene among Indian women with breast cancer and a family history of breast cancer,” said Soma Kumaravel Sundaram, Department of Cell Biology and microbiologgy in IISc.
New gaps were also recognized IISc genes in blindness because of glaucoma.
At the Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research, researchers have identified a gene that epilepsy.
The research group headed by Professor Anand Anuranjan is currently in a common effort to digitize epilepsy Indian families concerned for the development of new genes associated with epilepsy.
The group was also the identification of genes and mutations cause deafness and showed that mutations in the gene connexin26 is a major cause of profound deafness in the Indian population.
“Identifying these mutations in infants and children, help in early diagnosis of deafness, so that intervention strategies can be achieved at an early stage, such as rehabilitation,” says Professor Anand.
A large part of gene research in the city is also laying new diagnostic techniques for diseases and disorders of health. The study of breast cancer, for example, a test for early detection of hereditary breast cancers.
Genetics many projects are also on other laboratories, including the city of Nimhans.
