Management school capping enrollment

Management school capping enrollment

The University at Buffalo School of Management is shrinking its incoming class in a bid to improve its place in national rankings and create more demand for higher-quality students.

The incoming fall class in the graduate program will be capped at 100 to 120 full- time students, down from about 150, said David Frasier, assistant dean and director of full-time graduate programs in the school.

The strategy is very clearly to increase the overall quality of the full-time MBA class with an objective of improving our national profile, he said.

Its not easy to please these MBA grads

Its not easy to please these MBA grads

A five-figure salary, accommodation, car and other frills are just not enough to hook these management graduates. MNCs queuing up at citys B-schools could do well by considering this: Make the job profile more appealing.

Package is not the only consideration. I can compromise on a few thousands, but the job should be to my liking, said Divjot Gill, a final year MBA student at Punjab College of Technical Education.

At PAU Business Department, a few students, in fact, refused to sit for interviews as they did not fancy the job profiles posted by the companies.

Full-time vs part-time MBA

Full-time vs part-time MBA

I am 32 years old and working as a quality manager in the automotive component industry. I have been in this line for over seven years now. I am contemplating doing a full-time MBA (Finance) in one of South-East Asias reputed B-schools. I have done a one-year diploma in financial management and am interested in finance, investments and insurance (am qualified to sell insurance too).

I plan to do an MBA because I feel it would give my career a lift and also because I think I have been in my field (quality assurance) for too long. I would like to know if this would be a good move for me. Am I too old to do a full-time MBA? Or, would it be better to study part-time? I am not married and have no major financial commitments.

As you have already done a diploma in financial management, you may follow it up with a regular one-year MBA programme with specialisation in finance from a reputed institution. This would cut the lead time by one year compared to the two-year regular MBA model. You can move away from quality assurance to finance/insurance with confidence. A full-time MBA from a renowned institution has its own advantages in terms of better placement opportunities. This is the right time for you to switch, and your age is no bar for studying MBA. While choosing the institution, take into account especially, its credentials in placing students with work experience. From full-time work to full-time study, you should be prepared to put in extra hours and the maximum effort to stay on top.

UC Davis MBA Students Make Corporate Tour of Japan

UC Davis MBA Students Make Corporate Tour of Japan

Any trade delegation to Japan would be envious of the itinerary: exclusive meetings with leaders of more than a dozen major corporations, a visit to the Tokyo Stock Exchange and dinner with senior officials responsible for the countrys industry and trade.

But this two-week trip begins this weekend for 13 MBA students at the Graduate School of Management at UC Davis. The trip is the culmination of the schools 10-week international management practicum — one of the ways the management school helps prepare its students to lead in the global economy.

The course and field study, introduced 10 years ago, integrate concepts from every discipline in the MBA curriculum and open a window onto the markets, industries and business practices of the region studied.
