Thousands of college-bound Oakland County students and their parents are putting pencil to paper to determine how to pay for a four-year degree.
University administrators across Michigan are waiting on Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the Legislature to determine how much money they will receive from the state.
Hanging in the balance are the tuition costs that parents and students hope will not become so prohibitive that they rule out higher education for the next generation of Michigans professionals and entrepreneurs.

A judge dismissed animal cruelty charges Monday against a pre-veterinary student at Michigan State University who had been accused of torturing and killing animals at her familys farm.
Kate Mills, 20, who held the title of 4-H queen for the local chapter of the 4-H international youth-oriented agricultural organization, had faced the possibility of losing her crown if convicted.
Lapeer District Judge Laura Barnard said he dismissed the charges against Mills because a lease showed that she did not live at her familys farm in Lapeer Countys Imlay Township at the time of the March arrest. Mills was living in East Lansing, Michigan, where she is a full-time student.

Michigans career-services director offers some contrarian advice on career management while discussing the recruiting process

For the class of 2006, Cotrone and his staff of 15 helped Ross 430 full-time MBAs achieve mean starting salaries of $94,000 with median signing bonuses of $19,500. While a third of Ross class remains in the Midwest for work, half of the class ventured to either financial capital New York or tech-oriented Silicon Valley or Seattle. Roughly 15% of the graduates accept jobs overseas. With the healthy MBA recruiting climate, Cotrone has seen a resurgence in real estate and a big jump in new media.
Cotrone spoke to BusinessWeek.com reporter Janie Ho and explained why you should not keep your options open. Here are edited excerpts of their conversation:

The definition of residency as it pertains to elected office on boards of education, community college boards of trustees, the state board of education, and the boards for the states three largest universities — Wayne State University, the University of Michigan, and Michigan State University — would be clarified under legislation introduced by Rep. Robert Dean (D-Grand Rapids) and Rep. Steve Tobocman (D-Detroit) in recent weeks.
House Bill (HB) 4739 and HB 4740 have been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, where they awaiting a hearing.
The bills would define the residence of a local school board member or member of a community college board of trustees as a place at which a person habitually sleeps, keeps his or her personal effects, and has a regular place of lodging. In addition, according to the language in the bills, if a person has more than one residence, or if a spouse has a residence separate from that of the other spouse, the place at which the person resides the greater part of the time is their official residence.
