On Friday afternoon at 4 PM, students and faculty received an Awareness Bulletin describing an e-mail including bomb threats which Public Safety and the Swarthmore Police Department believe to be false.
Colleges around the country have been receiving similar messages in the past week, including Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, and MIT. Carnegie Mellon evacuated its science building and was searched by bomb-sniffing dogs, which turned up nothing. The FBI is currently investigating the threats, believed to be a large-scale hoax.
We’ll have more information about the Swarthmore situation for you by Monday.

Carnegie Mellon psychologist Brooke Feeney, an associate professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University, captured first place at the inaugural Mind Gym Academic Awards in London for a ground-breaking study on a phenomenon she calls the dependency paradox, cultivating a healthy recognition of the need for dependence in relationships.
Feeney, a social psychologist, received the award based on a paper that appeared in the February issue of Personality and Social Psychology. She conducted two studies in which people were tracked over a 6-month period to see how well they could accomplish goals they set for themselves. Individuals achieved more on a personal level, cultivated a greater sense of independence, and took more risks if they were in supportive relationships where dependence was permitted..
Dependence is often seen as a sign of weakness, explains Feeney. Based my research on attachment theory, reliance on a significant other is an important part of human nature. It provides a secure base from which partners can go out into the world.

Carnegie Mellon Universitys Board of Trustees today approved the reappointment of Carnegie Mellon President Jared L. Cohon for a third five-year term. Cohon became Carnegie Mellons eighth president in 1997 and was reappointed in 2002.
The reappointment was recommended by a 12-member Presidential Review Committee, which was formed last fall in accordance with university bylaws.
Jared Cohon has been, and will continue to be, an exceptional leader of Carnegie Mellon University, said Carnegie Mellon Chairman of the Board David Shapira. He has taken this university to new heights and has overseen tremendous growth in education, research and development. His astute leadership and his inimitable management style have advanced Carnegie Mellon as a leader not only in the Pittsburgh region, but also around the world. I dont believe theres a better person to lead this great university than Jared Cohon.
