Introducing the SPE Fellows for 2001.

The society of Plastics Engineers honored 15 SPE Senior Members during the 2001 ANTEC by designating them Fellows of the Society. Last month, we profiled eight of the honorees; here are the remaining seven.

Dr. Shau-Tarng Lee, director, Research & Development, Sealed Air Corporation, Saddle Brook, New Jersey, received this honor for his effort to make foam more environmentally sound. Dr. Lee developed carbon dioxide as the sole blowing agent for thick and special application PE foam products. He developed a carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon foaming agent mixture to improve the safety status of hydrocarbon foam extrusion operations, and to reduce hydrocarbon emissions. His development of HCFC-22 to replace CFC-12 for PE foam extrusion and thus reduce ozone depletion allowed Sealed Air to remain a producer of environmentally friendly foams. He introduced volatile ethane as the blowing agent to replace butane and propane for low-density PE foam sheets. Dr. Lee observed shear effects on nucleation for foam-enhanced devolatilization in batch experiments. From this, foam die design technology was greatly improved by the balanced consideration of rheology and foaming. A member of the Society since 1983, Dr. Lee is affilia ted with the Palisades Section and the Thermoplastic Materials & Foams Division of SPE. Costas Gogos and Elliott L. Weinberg sponsored him. He holds seven patents and has several pending, edited Foam Extrusion: Principles and Practices, has contributed nearly 70 technical articles on foam, and has presented seminars both in the U.S. and in Taipei. He received a bachelor of engineering degree in industrial chemistry from National Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan, and a master’s degree in engineering and PhD from Stevens Institute of Technology.

Peter G. Pape, retired associate industry scientist, Dow Coming Corporation, Midland, Michigan, was recognized for using the chemistry of silane coupling agents and the unique properties of silicone polymers to make improvements in plastics materials. Since fiberglass-reinforced plastics are neither very strong nor durable without coupling agents, it has been Mr. Pape’s work to optimize silane technology for each specific application to give improved physical properties, increased environmental resistance, high temperature resistance, and improved electrical properties. In applications to glass-reinforced epoxy printed circuit boards, which affect calculators, cell phones, and computers, his work solved the industry’s concern with interfacial failure in making defect-free components. He introduced new ultrahigh-molecular weight silicone additives to thermoplastics, which improve lubrication, abrasion resistance, surface appearance, and processing. He is responsible for the commercialization of the Sioplas[R] process, which uses the moisturereactivity of silanes to crosslink thermoplastics with water. This allows the use of simple and low-cost extrusion lines, and has led to more versatile formulations of wire and cable, heat-resistant pipe, film, foam and other crosslinked products. A member of the Society since 1983, Mr. Pape is affiliated with the Mid-Michigan Section and the Polymer Modifiers & Additives Division of SPE. Ernest A. Coleman and David Riley were his sponsors. He has presented or published 70 technical papers, book chapters, and encyclopedia articles, and lectured at short courses on adhesion and coupling agents. He holds a BS in chemistry and mathematics from Alma College, an MS in organic chemistry from The Ohio State University, with additional graduate studies at Michigan State University and Saginaw Valley State University.

India’s Sci-Tech Powerhouse

The application and development of modern science in a rich and complex cultural, intellectual and physical environment, Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in the world as a major research centres, application and the instruction.

Bangalore, South India, has long been known for its healthy climate. Today, he is better known as the capital of science and India seems a sign of 10 technopolises of the world, according to a Newsweek poll. This transformation has been created primarily because of the presence of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the country of the first research institute. Founded in 1909, has steadily during the past nine decades a major centre for research in all fields of science and technology. A glance at the origin, growth and future directions of the IISc is revealing, like many institutions have opted for a certain time in India, then collapsed.

The beginnings of IISc may involve several improbable, meetings and coalitions. One was between Vivekenanda Swami, a Hindu ascetic, Nusserwangi Jamsetji Tata and, above all, Indian industrialists at the dawn of years of the nineteenth century. They met during the sailing Japan USA. Vivekenanda was on the way in managing the Parliament of religions. (Seine-cast a hypnotic charm address to the audience and propels him international fame). Tata The two discussed regulations for the establishment of an institute for science research in India. Tata was convinced that this should be a modern monastery, met with a scientist, but ascetic, mind. It was also inspired by the model of the Johns Hopkins University in the USA.

Memorialized as “citizens of Bombay Parsi” and a “captain of industry,” Tata was remarkable in many ways of India for his time. In 1886, he conceived the idea of creating an Indian Institute of Science devoted to learning and research higher. In September 1898, then he offered the property with a value of two hundred pounds at an institute aimed at enabling the intellect of Western countries to explore science and find new career opportunities in the industry. If Tata died in 1904, he had laid the groundwork for the IISc, founded in the year 1909. He had barriers in his lifetime, his heirs geschuftet and collaborators, his dreams and plans into reality. indeed, he had his fortune is divided into three: two of his son and the Institute.

The next coalition was unlikely in the Tata family, the viceroy of India and the Maharaja of Mysore. Lord Curzon took over as viceroy, December 30, 1898. The very next day, he turned his attention to the proposal of Tata. Many cities wetteiferte at home, at the Institute: Bombay, Calcutta, Poona, Nasik, Nagpur. Some prefer cooler climates, Naini Tal, Coonoor, and Bangalore into consideration. Roorkee, India’s First homeland Engineering College, was a strong weapon. William Ramsay, discoverer of rare gases and Nobel laureate, was asked for his advice. Finally, the Kolar Gold Fields and other mineral deposits of the State Mysore tilted the balance in favour of Bangalore. Furthermore, it is a fantasy Dewan, Mr K. Seshadri Iyer, convinced the Maharaja of Mysore to offer 372 hectares of land. This split in the theme of Bangalore’s favor.

First light

If the IISc opened in 1911, there were two divisions - General and applied chemistry and electrical engineering - and the library. The two departments have been characterized by a polarization of the industry. The library has been reviewed by the British government, so that the original cost of Nature and Proceedings of the Royal Society are among the most valuable possessions.

The Institute extraordinary recorder conduct began with its first director, MW Travers, a student of Ramsay. It was followed by A. and G. Bourne M.O. Forster. These first theatre directors were not just Great Britain as merchants, soldiers or missionaries. Instead, they tried to distinguish scientists, a form of modern science and technology in their new homeland. It must be remembered that India is a rich tradition of science, especially astronomy, mathematics, medicine and technology, including metallurgy. But this tradition has disappeared under the Mogul dynasties (1526 - 1857) and the United Kingdom regulations.

The IISc by different institutions by the British, under the auspices of Thomas Babington Macaulay years beginning in 1830. He wanted too well the Indians and trained professionals to serve the British Empire. It is Indian brown colour, but the British taste. The universities of Madras, Bombay and Calcutta have been established on this basis if it grew time to meet different goals. A national voice was that the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya implemented, Banaras Hindu University in the national university. But it was after the IISc. In many respects, the IISc is the torchbearer of India for science, despite its mixed British and Indian ancestry.

Wipro Technologies Wins Prestigious IEEE Award for Software Process Excellence

Wipro Technologies, the Global IT services division of Wipro Limited (NYSE:WIT), has become the first company outside the United States to be conferred the prestigious award for Software Process Achievement (SPA) by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society. The SPA award was presented to Wipro Technologies on May 7th in an International Conference on Software Engineering held at Portland, Oregon USA. The award is given for achieving a high software process capability and establishing a basis for moving to a very broad improvement program that concerns people and product, rather than just process and issues. Adding another feather to its cap, Wipro is the first Indian company ever to be nominated for this award.

The Computer Society’s Award for Software Process Achievement is given for improvement in an organization’s software process. “Process discipline is the most critical success element of offshore outsourcing,” said Dean Davison, Vice President of Meta Group. To be considered for this award, the improvement must be sustained, measured and significant. Wipro Technologies underwent a thorough evaluation process amongst nominations from different organizations across the globe. The evaluation process included initial short listing of nominees as finalists and then site visit by the evaluation committee.

The IEEE Evaluation committee consisted of Quality Guru’s like Watts Humphrey of Software Engineering Institute (SEI) USA; William Riddle, Solution Architect at TeraQuest Metrics Inc; Prof. Victor Basili, Founder & Member of International Software Engineering Research Network and Prof. Manny Lehman, of Imperial College, an authority on software engineering. The committee visited Wipro Technologies software development center at Bangalore and evaluated Wipro’s Processes and Practices following nomination of Wipro Technologies for the Award.

Complimenting Wipro on the award, the IEEE Evaluation committee said, “Wipro’s well-defined and implemented software process improvement program was appreciated and the breadth & depth of the organisation’s capability achievement and improvement program were lauded as the best that the committee had found since inception of the award nine years ago.”

“We are very excited and receiving this prestigious award is a great honour,” said Sambuddha Deb, Chief Quality Officer, Wipro Technologies. “This recognition from the IEEE Computer Society is yet another feather in Wipro’s cap and validates our vision of making quality a culture within and validates the significant strides we have taken in our quest for quality,” he added.

The committee also recognised that Wipro achieved Capability Maturity Model Level V (An international standard for quality) throughout its 10,000 plus person, international workforce unlike most other organizations reviewed who had achieved this level of capability within only part of their organization. In addition, Maturity Level V for both the P-CMM and CMMI capability maturity models were achieved very quickly, the breadth and speed of which were unprecedented.

With this award Wipro joins a select group of organizations like the Software Engineering Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Directorate of Aircraft Management, Test Software and Industrial Automation Branches, Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center.

Pune is a new direction in design.

Pune: barely a month, Pune had a high level of visitors from Italy: Design guru Leonardo Fioravanti, the man who has designed no less than eight Ferrari cars. The visit was largely unnoticed, but it signals a trend increasingly become a design industry.

Fioravanti was the consolidation of the strategic alliance between his company, Fiorovanti Srl in Italy, with averages Struck Conex Auto Avio Pvt. Ltd, a Pune company is specialized in editing tools and dies for sheetmetal panels and components for the automotive industry.

While plans Fioravanti Indian style cars for car manufacturers in almost one third of costs in Italy, Conex, for its part smart sheetmetal manufacturing prototypes of components and subassemblies.

At one point, Conex, by their alliance with Fioravanti, hopes in developing their capacities in the arena of style and attract business from the inside and outside India, said Avinash Belgamwar manager. And this is only the beginning of history. At least four other companies, for example, design, design and Onio Elephant design, progress in the field of design deaf and dumb, so that a product Pune active Hub talented designers in the country.

What is striking is that many of these companies, led by young graduates at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, and the Industrial Design Center, IIT, Mumbai, identify opportunities for product growth Designer. The history, they are script is not unknown. Global companies have begun to relax and observe, although in a small way now.

In a small apartment, that the functions of an office aundh road NID graduatesturned entrepreneurs Manoj Kothari (Alumnus, IIT, Mumbai) and Prakash Khanzode are occupied with the elaboration of a roof-Top DVD player for cars. Your customers? Based in Hong Kong one of the manufacturers of electronics, for which she had designed an MP3 player, one of the oldest on to the market.

In the past, Onio, led by Khanzode Kothari and gift items and candlestands for the mother of all departments in the business world, the American Wal-Mart, structural and packaging for exports to the flower dries Country Netherlands. They are now working for a German inventor in the world has patented an ergonomic office chair.

Your other project involves a series of perfume bottles, to the exclusion of world exports of the company’s sales Bluom. “All the design work we are doing to foreign customers or to Indian exports oriented company,” said Kothari, while describing the opportunities for global product designers in India.

He believes that it takes at least five years before exploding for the occasion Indian Designer products. Another group of graduates NID, and her husband Satish Falguni Gokhale, head of design, information on transportation, are also actively to foreign customers.

Satish, earlier this month was adjudged “best Indian designer” in a national competition, provided that its design critic of the German company of its Digipass. He gave his fire Digi’s announcement of modular systems a form of inter-changeable parts, not only improved performance, but also bettered the British Standards.

Satish is now available in at least four meetings with potential customers western expressed an interest in the design of arrivals Information on transport. Elephant Design, launched by five, NID fresh graduates in 1989, is one of the more it comes to success stories in the nest. This multidisciplinary approach council opened a branch in London three years ago.

“We have, it is clear that London is the hub of international design, and we wanted to put in place on the base,” said Sudhir Sharma, one of the founding directors. According to Sudhir, a subsidiary of London does not work Only as an office of international marketing for elephants design group, but also allows the company to comply with the recent in the world of industry and product design.

The five, decided to become an entrepreneur and literally started their business from top to bottom, has decided to operate in Pune because it offers not only a strong engineering / manufacturing, but also the near Mumbai. Satish, the meaning of design, believes that the Western world is not yet known, quality designer India, because Indian companies themselves have not exhausted their potential by hand. Accordingly, Indian products have no conception of strong entries.

Ruing the lack of a national association of Indian designers, Satish believes that the time has come for an industry for the marketing skills of Indian designers abroad. According to him, Indian designers are innovative, fast delivery, inexpensive and qualityconscious - qualities that internationally competitive. “We must capitalize on these strengths,” he says.
