U.S. mortgage applications drop last week - MBA

U.S. mortgage applications fell for the fifth consecutive week, largely reflecting a drop in demand for home purchase loans, an industry trade group said on Wednesday.

The Mortgage Bankers Association said its seasonally adjusted index of mortgage application activity for the week ended April 13 dropped 2.5 percent to 630.6.

Borrowing costs on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages, excluding fees, averaged 6.22 percent, up 0.06 percentage point from the previous week, its highest since early February. Interest rates, however, were significantly below year-ago levels of 6.56 percent.

Rick Walters, Jamestown Public Schools special project coordinator, believes he’s saved students more than $300,000.

Meanwhile at Frewsburg Central School, two students received associate’s degrees before being handed a high school diploma.

‘‘Our parents have got another benefit from supporting education,’’ Walters said.

That benefit, according to Walters, who also teaches an American history class, is long-distance learning.

Originally begun in the spring of 1997, according to Mike Babya, BOCES distance learning specialist, more than 20 districts with 27 classrooms offer interactive video courses to students across Chautauqua County. Currently, Babya said there are 49 courses offered, some for college credit, including art, computer programming, music theory and United State’s history
