Campus call, near & far

Michael Dias saw an advertisement in the paper announcing the arrival of Air Hostess Academy in Calcutta. At The Telegraph Careergraph Live Career Fair last month, he signed up for a course in aviation and hospitality management. The former student of St Thomas Boys School is planning to tackle the year-long course along with a BA correspondence degree from Indira Gandhi National Open University and a part-time job.

Michael has company while choosing a career path off the beaten track. The road less travelled is now crowded with his peer group making the transition from school to college.

And dearth of choice is not a problem plaguing students when it comes to courses and campuses. Not when their range of options includes medical degrees in Russia or China, management or IT diplomas in Canada or Singapore. Not with US and UK universities starting up campuses in Mumbai and Calcutta and vocational courses like jewellery designing and animation being available in the city itself. Then there are traditional favourites like English, law or economics, at a JU or a Xaviers, in Oxford or Cambridge.

An explosion of new courses and institutes in the city, around the country and abroad adds up to a win-win situation for students ? provided they know what they are going in for, how and why.

Making the right choice is not as easy as it sounds, with the biggest hurdle being the lack of guidance and qualified counsellors, resulting in confusion, say those in the know. ?Students should avoid getting swayed by the glitz and glamour and stick to the facts,? feels Snigdha Gohain, a Calcutta-based career counsellor.

Holistic help is often at hand at the admission and career fairs galore trundling through town, peddling education dreams and promising practical means to make them come true.

?Education is big business,? says Sanjeev Bolia, CEO, Afairs, organiser of the Admissions Fair, being held at the Ice Skating Rink till June 20. Bolia has been organising education fairs for the past 14 years. The Admission Fair is the second one for Afairs this year, with the Career Fair held in May and the promise of ?several more? in the coming months.

?A big chunk of outstation students, particularly in south India, is from Bengal. So the number of institutions participating in the fair has gone up substantially. Last year, there were about 20 from Karnataka; this time there are 40,? adds Bolia.

The four-day Career Fair had a footfall of 15,000, and a similar figure is expected for this one, with spot admissions to institutes home and abroad being the star attraction.

Jaggu is lively and loud; very different from me

My father was in the army. I had two brothers. Early childhood was spent in Chennai. Later we shifted to Devarodh near Pune. Later part of my schooling was in Delhi. I did my pre-medical at Delhi, and at Armed Forces Medical College Pune I did my medicine. I got married soon after I finished medicine, and came to Bangalore in 1974.

Where did you first meet your husband?

My cousin got married to my husband’s brother. I couldn’t attend the wedding. During my holidays, after final year exams, when my parents decided to visit Chennai, I joined them. That’s when I met my cousin and her husband, and Jaggu. It was a chance meeting. He liked me and sent word through my cousin. We met and I wanted to know if his mother had sent him. He said he liked me. I said I wanted to work after marriage and he had no problem. Earlier when we all were chatting up at home, I sang a song from the film Madhumati, and we argued over who the heroine was…Maybe he wasn’t used to girls talking and that got him interested I guess!

And then?

He had finished his IIT and gone abroad to his MS. His mother was worried because neither was he allowing her to see girls nor was he doing anything himself. Our parents decided there was no point in checking horoscopes if we’d decided to get married. I extended my stay and then went back to college. When I was absent, a friend spread a rumour that Latha had got engaged and would be getting married soon. I went back and said I was engaged…and no one would believe me!

Has marriage changed your life?

A lot. If not for marriage I’d have gone back to Delhi, done internship and joined a hospital. But I definitely wouldn’t have married to a Green Card holder and gone to America, as was the trend then.

But you came to Bangalore.

Six months after marriage. They had started the Prestige pressure cooker factory and we had to come down. I was disappointed, because I wanted to live with his family. In fact I kept telling Jaggu, I fell in love with your mother more than you! She was very charming and outgoing. After we came here, I had three boys and there was no time to take on anything else.

What about work?

I worked for sometime in NIMHANS (National Institute for Mental Health and Neuro Sciences). And would’ve joined PG in Psychiatry, but my third son arrived. He was only two months old before the course began and I lost my chance. They said only 12 holidays a year and no Sundays.

Environmentalists reject the draft policy

Jaipur, OCT. 27 A group of environmentalists has rejected the draft of the National Environmental Policy of 2004 as “un-Indian.” You said that the agenda of the underlying loan policy during the former government of the National Democratic Alliance, and now put into circulation, the current government, the Centre for comments, been promoting “importiert”und technologies to offer advice of foreign experts.

The group, consisting of activists and environmentalists have expressed skepticism about the policy of the Agenda for the improvement of woodlands in the country, whose current 23 percent to 33 percent by 2012. This is the only program require means up to 80,000 crores case per year. This is another mega-project unrealistic, but also stressed.

“The perception of the Indian policy is absent. The tone and content of the document is not suited to our conditions. We want a community based on environmental policy and human participate in the revitalization of traditional institutions, ”the Magsaysay prize winner, Rajendra Singh, better known as Waterman, said the brain to attend a session of the assault on the draft of a policy of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Human Ecology, the environment and population studies at the University of Rajasthan.

“The project is ostensibly an effort to phasing practices and conservation policies, but has adopted the provisions of the document denying intentions profession,”Mr. Singh noted. He said the role of World Bank experts in preparing the document, curious, ready by the economic reforms.

“It looks like an economic document. The language is much more than any other in regard to conservation and preservation of ecology,”noted Bansuri Taneja Pune-based NGO, Kalpavriksh. This is an anti-personnel document. If it is adopted plunge into the chaos of the environment in the country,”nonagenarian Gandhian, Siddhraj Dhadda said the President about the debate. The project of transforming the environment in a market that he claimed. Mr.Dhadda threatens the establishment of a satyagrah, if the government decided, go ahead and the implementation of the policy. They shall take place throughout the system”, he pointed out.

“There is even a mention of the” investor “in the document.” Until now, villagers and the government are used for those concerned. Where investors concerned now?”Claimed to Mr. Sharma .

“The document, while discussing the various agricultural and climatic zones throughout the country close in the desert. The arrival of Indira Gandhi canal and the discovery of oil and natural gas in western Siberia Rajasthan , Pose a serious threat to the ecology of the desert,”Determined, p. Bhakre, director of Indira Gandhi Centre. VIEW: Two types of censorship-V Krishna Ananth

It is regrettable that after so much effort, most elderly leader of the left could pave the way for only a Starlet a time when the cinema-Hindi, provided that their contribution was largely on process of turning women into a commodity. But then, that CBFC is not a promotion agency radicals cinema

The judgement of Maharashtra and the news of the forest Brigand Veerappan was shot dead, as it last week, dominates the media scene in India and two controversial moves by the Congress-led UPA government shut down without discussion. Anupam Kher The dismissal as chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the appointment of Shar Mila Tagore in his place and a Fiat by mandarins, Doordarshan in the telecommunications casting against a video documentary on the life and the time of his Jayaprakash Narayan Birthday deserve serious discussion. More so, because these indices seem to be on the shape of things in the coming days and months.

It turns out that changing of the guard at the CBFC was conducted at the initiative of the CPI (M) Patriarch, Harkishen Singh Surjeet. The end result is that Mr. Surjeet has defended himself against charges of defamation by Mr. Kher. The good news is that we have in our midst, a celebrity of Mr. Kher’s stature, who believe that the participation him with the RSS is defamatory! Anyway. What Surjeet, his campaign against Mr. Kher heads the CBFC would have plenty sense, if only he had also been able to ensure that the new head of the board, someone has more knowledge about the world of cinema and culture.

It is regrettable that after so much effort, most elderly leader of the left could pave the way for a single Starlet. And it is also a time when the cinema-Hindi, provided that their contribution was largely on the process of turning women into a commodity. Shar Mila Tagore, it should be remembered for his role in evening in Paris, in which they appear in all knocked a bathing suit. It was the first time in the history of Hindi cinema has emerged a heroine dressed rare. But then, that CBFC is not a promotion agency radical cinema. If the CBFC never acted against radicals Cinema: The legal conflicts Patwardan Anand had to fight in the last ten years prove this. It is not about who presides over the Agency.

The appointment of a recall Vijaykumari who, having succeeded to join the prestigious Film Institute in Pune (only by the back door) also manages a few months for the committee member. This happened during an emergency, if VC Shukla decided to information and broadcasting ministry. However, it still awaits Jaipal Reddy - who claims she was a student of Bertrand Russell - otherwise.

The story about the documentary on JP is much more serious. Among the components of the Socialist party congress, ginger group, whose goal was to push the Indian National Congress at a rate of radicals, JP coup emphasis on its role in organising U resistance against the British imperialists Following the arrest of Gandhiji and other media guide, shortly after the end of India resolution was adopted on 9 August 1942. In a few weeks, several police stations in the North-East Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have been taken by the freedom fighters and at least 250 stations damaged blasts triggered by the masses. There were at least 538 cases of police in the limelight of freedom fighters. Collective management, also new to the introduction of fines in villages, where property was damaged. “These protests led to the arrest of 60000 people. Thus, more than 26000 were under the Defence of India rules. Details on this phase of the freedom of movement and the effects of these developments on the colonial leaders have been extensively documented and published. JP It was one of the organizers of this phase in freedom of fight after a daring escape from prison, is established.

After independence, unlike Ram Manohar Lohia (JP’s pal, in many ways), which translates into a bitter critic of the Congress of Nehru and the party, JP is still far from political parties between 1952 (first election) and 1972-73, when Seething corruption in the political sphere, and the first cracks in the edifice Democratic visible. Although his voice, he filed an appeal against the latter, he threw a glance at former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the introduction of measures to clean up the image of substance. He wanted the laws to be amended so that the elected representatives of parties to change the way they change their clothes. He also requested a law to allow people to recall their elected representatives

PFBR fuel fabrication and reprocessing investment are generally built in Kalpakkam

Chennai: As part of the race is 500mW prototype reactor (PFBR) project completely autarkic, a fuel fabrication and reprocessing Kalpakkam is now completed.

Talking about the evolution Dr. Baldev Raj, director, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) said: “We have mastered the fuel cycle technology. The mixed oxide (MOX) fuel burn therefore 50000mw by day / tonne in the fast breeder test reactor. And it is more than 1 lakh MW days / tonne. “(The level of thermal energy from a ton of first updated elements fissile [or a tonne of fuel] is designated as Burn-up. Alternatives Burn-up can also be called, because the number of fission , Depending on location - hundreds of atoms first updated elements fissile).

As a result, officials believe that the processing of fuel, beside the PFBR would be an advantage. The initial plan was for fuel for the Tarapur nuclear power plant.

While cleaning approval is expected, officials say construction work for the project investment in 2007. This possibility is anticipated that the employment of nearly 1000 people.

In the same way on a new desalination plant is also taken into account for water and the requirements of PFBR fuel fabrication and reprocessing units going to Stream.

IGCAR, who designed the PFBR is one of two holders of the Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (Bhavini), the company has the RS3 ,492-crore project. The other project promoters is the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited.

Do India s armed forces possess IT edge over Pak

India and Pakistan going to war is something the rest of the world almost seems reconciled to, even if the current conflict dies down. If war does happen today or next year, how do software giant India’s armed forces compare with other armed forces that leverage IT with devastating effect? Do our armed forces have any IT-based advantages over Pakistan? Gaurav Patra & Punita Jasrotia find out

A few hundred years ago, wars were won on the strength of numbers. In the last century, wars have been won from the air, and also through the power of nuclear science. But today’s wars can be fought and won on the strength of information technology. Why the US has so few casualties in the wars it gets into today is because of the extent of IT-enablement of its armed forces. From smart cruise missiles, to stealth bombers to electronics warfare that cripples and disables the enemy’s systems and communication networks, to ground soldiers bristling with equipment that gives them an unbeatable advantage, no other nation in the world has used IT in defence so powerfully.

This holds many lessons for India as our armed forces and Pakistan’s forces just about begin to back down from the eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation that’s been on for months now. The Indian government does recognise the potential of IT-enablement of India’s armed forces, but the actual reality of ground level implementation is not yet all there. “I regret to say that India’s armed forces are far away from achieving superiority in the field of IT,” says Lt. Gen. Baldev Singh, MD, Rsystems International.

The role of IT in defence is much larger than in other walks of life, simply because of the size of the defence establishment. “IT is perhaps the greatest force multiplier for the armed forces. All future wars will be won or lost on the field of information technology,” says Lt. Gen. Singh. It’s clear that the side that has mastered the art of using IT to enhance its combat potential and combat effectiveness during peacetime will emerge as the victor in war. “The great relevance of technology for defence policy is undisputed. Technological developments make possible improvements in quality and force of existing weapon systems and open up novel options for political and military action,” adds Paul Kuah, product marketing manager, Southeast Asia Pacific, Autodesk.

The Ministry of Defence has set up a Task Force on Information Technology for Defence. This was set up keeping in mind the need to formulate an IT vision and policy for the defence sector and establish a platform for interaction with industry. India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has launched a number of programmes for the development of critical technologies and systems, through a consortia of institutions and industry, technological empowerment of laboratories and collaborative teams. The main theme flowing through all these initiatives is information technology. India’s much talked about missile programme, the LCA project, the pilotless target aircraft project and surveillance radar Indira are just some results of these initiatives. The Pace Plus supercomputer, 32-bit microprocessor Anupama, and silicon and gallium-based chips are some other IT successes.
