It’s not a UNC class, and he won’t be graded. The junior chemistry major is in an MCAT prep course at the Chapel Hill Kaplan Center.
“It’s more independent work than I initially expected,” Spencer said. “You put in maybe 20 hours a week. It’s pretty rigorous.”
The five-month class costs $1,849 and meets for three hours on Sundays.
Spencer, who is planning to take the MCAT this spring, sits in a room with about 25 other students, bent over their thick textbooks as they listen closely to instructor Dan Verges.
A first-year medical student at UNC School of Medicine, Verges said he took this class two years ago. He credits Kaplan with helping him achieve his high MCAT score.
He said he has seen the interest in prep courses grow during the years. “When I took the MCAT, I think there were only two people in the room who hadn’t taken a Kaplan or Princeton Review prep course.”
Last year 300,000 students nationwide took Kaplan courses to prepare for tests including the SAT, ACT, MCAT, GMAT, LSAT and GRE, said Russell Schaffer, senior communications manager for Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions.

Cracking the CAT or the Combined Admission Test is just not enough to get into the IIMs. Your Class X and XII marks matter more.
IIM-Bangalore has revealed the details of just what it takes to get into one of the country’s top B- schools.
Contrary to popular perception, CAT scores make up only one-fifth of an aspirant’s final score. Other criteria include the applicant’s X and XII results, which together account for almost 25 per cent of the final score.

I conceived my dream project while I was doing my MBA presentation
Mr KB Agrawal is a Chartered Accountant (and a gold medallist), who did an Exe-PGP from Indian Institute of Management-Indore (IIM-I) in 2002-2004, and is a turnaround expert based in Ahmedabad. He has 18 years of business and entrepreneurial experience, and is currently the MD of a commodity company. He has turned around a sick company with negative net worth – from a turnover of Rs 1 crore to making it a Rs 100 crore company. He is also developing a unique concept called Recycling Network – an idea he hit upon during his IIM-Indore days.
In this column, he talks about his management education days and how his PGP has helped him in business.
After managing to bell the CAT, I got admission in IIM Indore for the 2002-04 ExePGPM batch. But I was not clear what I could get out of it. Even a faculty member at IIM-A informally asked me what I am going to get out of the course! I had a rich industrial experience as an entrepreneur. Many of my suppliers and customers questioned me about my joining this course because most of them identified me with my 10 years of experience as an industrialist.

The CAT retest would be held on February 15. This was announced by the directors of the six IIMs after their meeting here on Wednesday. They, however, said further information such as whether earlier centres - 147 in 26 cities across the country - would be retained, would be announced later. No decision was also taken on which press would print the papers and what roles each of the IIMs would play in conducting the retest. Student will not have to pay any extra fees for the retest. Neither will they have to fill fresh forms. Those who missed the examination on November 23, which was cancelled, can take the test on February 15.
