Chief information officers (CIOs) are forever bombarded with new skills they must learn and business knowledge they are expected to gain if they want to reach the top. But where, for an IT leader, does the top stop?

If you work in sales, marketing or finance, there is a clear route to the boardroom and a decent chance of making chief executive if you have the ability.

But there is scant evidence of CIOs gaining the number one job, even once they have fought their way onto the management team.

Perhaps IT leadership is simply too young a role to be realistically considered. How many individuals have come up through a modern IT department, with the requisite number of years experience and the personal credibility to impress shareholders or political bosses?
