Rising gas prices are leading to a sudden demand in online college degree programs – since it’s cheaper to power your home computer than your car.
That’s the story for Nicola Boring-Mackie, a married mother of three who said her only option to get a college degree is online.
With costs for food and daycare going up along with the cash needed to fill her minivan’s gas tank, driving to classes at Chemeketa Community College is impossible, she said.
“If I had to do it just to go back and forth to school, it’s still an expense,” she said.
She’s one of 20,000 students enrolled in Chemeketa’s online degree program, which has seen its enrollment jump 18 percent in a year. Administrators said the growing popularity is due to high gas prices.
“There are a lot more students who are more comfortable with technology,” said Loraine Schmitt, Chemeketa’s distance education director. “So in addition to that, you have the gas prices. It’s a huge hit.”
According to Marcia Suter, who teaches an online English course, online learning has benefits beyond saving money. She said students tend to contribute more ideas online than in class.
“People who might have been reticent to contribute immediately, have an opportunity to think about it - and then contribute,” she said.
Boring-Mackie said the only difference between taking a class online versus in a classroom is the savings on gas money.
“It’s absolutely no different,” she said. “You have the same texts. You have the same outlines…”
Chemeketa’s online courses also cost the same as those taken on campus.

As more working adults enroll in online degree programs, universities are swooping in to lure students at the expense of the for-profit education companies that have offered degrees over the Internet for years.
