Ahmedabad, May 22: The Union HRD ministry’s recent decision to implement 50 percent reservation for Muslim students to postgraduate courses in Aligarh Muslim University, waves of surprise and disbelief to their former of the city. The members of the AMU Old Boys Association, Ahmedabad, say that there is no need to calculate a subject that has already been settled long ago.
RN Bhatnagar, executive director of the supernova Engineers Ltd, was very angry at the mention of the reservation. ”I do not think it is true … I spent the best part of my life in AMU and never felt that any form of discrimination … There is no question of a common cause in the AMU and if true, then it is too damaging to the reputation of the university,’’said Bhatnagar.
M Mallikarjun, Nirma Associate Professor at the Institute of Management, has never found an iota of municipal discrimination at its 25 years sharing the AMU, where his parents also studied and taught. ”The current development is a problem rather than a political game. This step was unnecessary, because anyway all the majority of pupils are Muslims and, hence, it may not even called appeasement of Muslims … It is a constant question of time,”he said.
Mallikarjun said, even if it (reservation) arrived, it was not tarnish the reputation of the University or its diplomas and titles as AMU has a longstanding reputation, and bonhomie between the different communities are not seen here somewhere.
Urdu critic and former professor of English at St. Xavier’s College Varis Alvi, who was recently the prestigious Ghalib Award at the national level, said, we must not forget that AMU was originally for raising the educational level of modern Muslims - For Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. ”There is not much left in AMU for the Muslims of their minority character was replaced with the secular nature … it is only Muslim University of names, while in reality it is like any other university,”he said.
Dr. DM Pestonjee, a retired professor of IIM Ahmedabad, is not known what might have gone behind the government, this announcement. He wondered how the new rule operational.
”We had a reservation for another type of AMU, ie, 50 per cent for nationals of former students, irrespective of caste and community … this (new system) is surprising because there is no dispute about the character of AMU minority,”he said.
Pestonjee said it still be remembered by the Faculty differs AMU, for example English as a disciple of Professor Amalendu Bose, the first Indian to PhD, professor of English at the University of Oxford. AMU”I studied and taught at the Benaras Hindu University for 15 years, but never found any discrimination in these two universities … Hindus was more enjoyable as Muslims in AMU BHU,”he said.
Aijaz Ahmed Khan, a senior human rights tribunal’s lawyer did not feel that the appeasement of Muslims. ”The new regulations will not appeasement, because the cinema are still on merits.
