Academic nirvana, the copy-paste the way

As schools and colleges and homework assignments open flow thick and fast, city teachers to reactivate a new nightmare - e-age plagiarism

Colleges and schools have begun, and so have the dreary homework assignments, and with them a new phenomenon - “copy-paste culture ‘. Needed Time was when plagiarism homework for patience, poring over dusty texts and courage to take on the high chances of getting caught. It was a research process in itself! Now, all it takes is a few clicks of a mouse. Welcome to e-age plagiarism, New Age parenting’s latest plague.

Though plagiarism in the US has received wide attention - US websites offer essays, term papers and research papers for sale - aamchi Mumbai is zara hatke. Plagiarism here mainly consists of copy-paste, say educationists. A few alien paragraphs here and there, woven into the text, without attribution. And it’s widespread, admit students.

According to Dr RK Jadhav, director, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, it’s happening at the student levels in Mumbai, not research at the higher levels. The reason: information on the net is basic. “It’s suitable only at the student level, not higher. The sites that contain in-depth information are usually pay and use. And they might not even have the desired information, making them a waste of money, he says.

Mumbai University Vice-Chancellor BL Mungekar says he hears persistent whispers of intellectual theft. An engineering lecturer at VJTI says she occasionally comes across assignments that appear to have been copy-pasted.

Because of increased use of the net in sourcing study material, many institutions have rules regarding copy-paste plagiarism. Xavier Institute of Communications this year included a “code of honor” in its prospectus. It says: “When using material previously published on the internet, in print, broadcast on television or radio, recorded on CDs, etc, or any other media, and sources indicated must be noted.

Since copy-paste plagiarism is more difficult to detect than passing off someone else’s work as one’s own, many institutions have wised up to it. Enter the watchdogs, whose job is to detect the shady stuff. Many institutions have panels of non-staffers who vet assignments. They are called ‘referees’ Jamnalal Bajaj, industry professionals empowered to hack grades if they detect plagiarism. Jadhav acknowledges But that’s not enough.

When technology is the medium of theft, technology can be used to detect it. Here’s what Advait Pura Dare (24), a student of international business administration in London, has to say: “Our institute scans all project into a computer, and detects data theft by comparing the project with different databases.”

Irrationality in traffic rules

The traffic police has become the most efficient and effective agent of the insurance companies! The irrationality of the traffic police on insisting that the original copy of the insurance policy should be carried along is beyond comprehension. What is then the use of getting your vehicle insured? If the vehicle is stolen along with the insurance policy copy, imagine the trouble and tension the vehicle owner has to suffer to get the claim. After all, the insurance company will ask for the original copy of the policy. The traffic police does not accept a photocopy of the policy. Many people
