The board of governors of the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) has zeroed in on Vivek Bhandari of Hampshire College, US as director.
The position was vacant since LK Vaswani resigned from the post four months ago.
The institute is also trying to double the strength of the faculty that was weakened by the exit of a few prominent professors from IRMA over the past few months. “The new director of IRMA will take charge in May 2007. We are also on a recruitment drive to double our faculty strength,” said YK Alagh, chairman, IRMA and noted scholar and economist. Meanwhile, Neelima Khetan will continue as an acting director.
Mr Alagh was brought in as IRMA chairman by the new management following milkman Verghese Kurien’s unceremonious exit. Mr Alagh had taken over the reins of country’s premier rural institute from acting chairperson Amrita Patel, chief of National Dairy Development Board.
Mr Bhandari is an associate professor of Modern History and South Asian Studies in the School of Social Science at Hampshire College in Amherst, US. He is also associated with the civil society organisation in India. The selection committee headed by Bakul Dholakia, director, IIM-A, Vijay Mahajan of Basix (micro finance institute) and Ms Patel had proposed the name of Mr Bhandari.
It has taken the IRMA management over 3 months to find the suitable director as not many competent candidates were interested to come to Anand. The transition period saw a number of faculty members submitting their resignations. The IRMA has had over 30 faculty members at times. But that number has now declined to 15.
“Apart from recruiting the faculty members, we are also trying to invite opinion leaders from various areas to spend time in IRMA campus. We are also considering to introduce new courses in the institute in association with the Central government,” said Mr Alagh, who was in Anand to head the meeting of the board of governors of IRMA. Alagh avoided taking queries from the media.
