It is difficult to imagine, looking at the placid green water occasionally broken by flashes of silver when the fishes surface at times, that it was all a sorry sight of filth and muck barely five years ago. In 2002, the pond in question was nothing more than a dumping ground with garbage nearly choking it. However, all this sounds extremely improbable after taking one look at the area, lined with trees. The members of Kaji Pukur Unnayan Samiti had tried hard for full five years to improve the condition of the pond spread across seven bighas at Baghajatin, and the results are visible.
The pond is a remarkable example of the kind of difference that a community can bring about with a little enthusiasm and coordinated effort. Instead of waiting for the government to get going, it is important to realise the significance of our ecosystem and start acting to preserve.
The initiative to restore the pond was supported by 593 people from the locality. They came forward and contributed at Rs 100 each to kick off the restoration work. “After the area was cleaned up around 241 handcart-full garbage was disposed,” said treasurer of the organisation, Amal Ranjan Chakraborty. “While going to office, if I found polythene bags floating on the pond within my reach, I would pull them out and throw them where garbage was dumped. Gradually people started realising how important this was,” said Chakraborty.
A clay bank was created around the pond to preserve the natural heritage and trees and grass were planted along the slope to prevent erosion. More than 70 varieties of trees including, mahogany, coconut, palm, deodar, mango, apart from several shrubs of flowers have been planted. Apart from the trees almost 160 saplings adorn the banks of the pond. The organisation also owns a paddle boat which can be hired for a nominal sum of money. This way, the pond has been transformed into a recreational spot too. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation had helped set up night lamps around the waterbody.
However, it would be a mistake to assume that the pond just caters to the aesthetic senses of people. The locals draw water from the pond for their daily chores. Previously, with all the muck it was impossible to use the water for household chores. Fish, worth Rs 52,000 is bred in the pond now. On weekends and holidays, it becomes a favoured haunt for anglers.
After a grant of Rs 2 lakh was made by the MPLAD in November 2006. Within 50 days, the organisation partially fenced off the area to keep the area clean and free of nuisance. However, the samiti has many more plans up its sleeves as they plan to do something about the sewage line that almost drains into the eastern portion of the pond.
The water in the pond is regularly tested. However, the Biological Oxygen Demand on the eastern side is twice the level in the water elsewhere. Of the late the pond has been subject of research for community management and environmental concern by premier institutes like Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM).
“We want another boat to draw people to the pond. We also want a duck house. Our councillor Debabroto Majumdar helps us a lot but funds crunch hold us back. “ says Chaterjee
Narayan Das Ray, secretary of the samiti, said, “The number of members who have helped us maintain the pond has come down as many elderly people have passed away. However, our commitment to preserve the ecology remains and will not change.”

Newspaper articles about Pearl Harbor detail the destruction caused during the darkest two hours and 20 minutes in the history of the American Navy. The Japanese sneak attack of December 7, 1941, not only killed over 2,000 American sailors, it plunged the United States headlong into World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor on that placid Sunday morning in 1941 would become a signature moment for a generation. Like the attack on the Maine and the Battle of the Alamo before it, the attack on Pearl Harbor became the rallying point for American soldiers in every theatre of combat
