Enrollment in online courses through Kaplan University has surpassed 27,000 students, making it the largest university in Iowa.
While online education appeals to men and women, nearly three-quarters of Kaplan students are women, most in their 30s, pursuing associates, bachelors and masters degrees, or career-oriented certificates.
In its 2006 Making the Grade report, online education advocacy organization Sloan Consortium, estimated that nearly 3.2 million students took at least one online course during the 2005 fall term compared with 2.3 million the previous year.

Kaplan U. to offer new MBA
Kaplan University, the Fort Lauderdale-based online higher-learning institution, is teaming up with Newsweek to offer a masters of business administration.
The Kaplan University/Newsweek MBA will use breaking business news to illuminate issues and theories used in traditional MBA course work. Students will be able to talk with the magazines reporters and editors to get insights on news events.

New higher education opportunities in the UK will be opened up to many thousands of potential students following plans jointly unveiled today by Kaplan, a global provider of education and training, and the University of Essex to provide a wholly online Foundation degree course.
The course will offer multiple start dates throughout the year with a continuous 52-week academic calendar, and will allow students to study wherever they have access to the Internet. Students without the time or opportunity to engage in a full-time Foundation course will now be able to pursue a higher-education qualification focused on helping them develop

Columbia Basin College will offer a video conference at 8 a.m. Thursday for people interested in getting an online bachelor's degree in nursing.

I am not surprised that the University of Houston is having enrollment problems, because it is not keeping up with the times. The world of higher education has changed dramatically over the last few years with the proliferation of online colleges and universities. As the Chronicle's July 16 article ["UH up against enrollment decline"] pointed out, there is stiff competition for MBA and other program students in the Houston area.
I am in a doctorate program at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and for me, it was easier to attend Nova than UH. UH had no DBA or Ph.D.
Half of a group of prospective college students who said they would be interested in taking an online course in the next 12 months also said they would like to enroll in a completely online degree program, according to a recent survey conducted by the American InterContinental University Online.
The survey also showed that 32 percent of the respondents favored a degree program that was mostly online but included some campus-based courses. Ten percent said they wanted a program that was primarily on campus, the survey showed. Eight percent wanted half online; half on campus.
