Capella University an accredited, online university based in Minneapolis, has announced a new Education Specialist (EdS) degree program in its School of Education. Within this online degree program, two specializations are being offered, Leadership in Educational Administration, and Curriculum and Instruction. Capella also announced a new education-focused specialization, School Counseling, as part of its Master of Science in Human Services program.
“With the addition of the EdS degree, Capella can offer teachers and administrators an intermediate degree between our master’s and PhD degree programs,” said Harry McLenighan, dean of Capella’s School of Education. “According to the National Center for Education Statistics’ most recent Schools and Staffing Survey, more than 30 percent of the nation’s public school principals have an EdS or other intermediate degree. We think it’s important to provide an EdS option for people who want education beyond their master’s degree, but currently don’t want to pursue a PhD.”
Within its new EdS degree program, Capella is offering a state-approved specialization in Leadership in Educational Administration. State approval is required for principal or superintendent licensure in some states, and Capella is one of very few online universities to offer a state-approved Leadership in Educational Administration within an EdS program. The other new EdS specialization, Curriculum and Instruction, was developed to help meet the demand for curriculum specialists, a field that has been growing in response to increased calls for educational quality and accountability. Capella also offers master’s degree and doctoral degree specializations in Leadership in Educational Administration and Curriculum and Instruction.
