UH enrollment issues

I am not surprised that the University of Houston is having enrollment problems, because it is not keeping up with the times. The world of higher education has changed dramatically over the last few years with the proliferation of online colleges and universities. As the Chronicle’s July 16 article ["UH up against enrollment decline"] pointed out, there is stiff competition for MBA and other program students in the Houston area. I am in a doctorate program at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and for me, it was easier to attend Nova than UH. UH had no DBA or Ph.D. program for marketing that would accommodate my needs as a working student. Nova offered hybrid courses (both online and in-class), flexible class schedules and courses taught in Austin and at six other off-site campuses. UH required that I attend full-time or not at all. The prerequisites I needed for my program were not offered by UH, either. I had to go to Troy University in Troy, Ala., to get these courses online. I received my master’s at the University of Texas at Austin through a hybrid online/in-class program that met every other Friday and Saturday for a year; half of my class took their courses entirely online.
