How to Raise Female M.B.A. Enrollment

Boosting female enrollment in M.B.A. programs has proved to be one of the most stubborn challenges facing business schools. The percentage of women has held fairly steady for many years — in the 25% to 35% range at most schools. That glass ceiling troubles Elissa Ellis-Sangster, executive director of the Forté Foundation in Austin, Texas, an organization of companies and schools dedicated to increasing the number of women in M.B.A. programs and the business world. Earlier this month, she talked with M.B.A. Track columnist Ron Alsop about obstacles schools face in attracting more women and some strategies to try to overcome them.

WSJ: Are there any signs of progress in increasing female enrollment?

Ms. Ellis-Sangster: For a long time, wed see a half percentage or full percentage point increase, but then it would often fall back the next year. Last year, however, we saw a little more uptick at some top-rated M.B.A. programs. Among schools that belong to the Forté Foundation, for example, there was a gain in female enrollment o f nearly two percentage points. This year, I would expect another increase, but its too early to know how much

UH enrollment issues

I am not surprised that the University of Houston is having enrollment problems, because it is not keeping up with the times. The world of higher education has changed dramatically over the last few years with the proliferation of online colleges and universities. As the Chronicle's July 16 article ["UH up against enrollment decline"] pointed out, there is stiff competition for MBA and other program students in the Houston area. I am in a doctorate program at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and for me, it was easier to attend Nova than UH. UH had no DBA or Ph.D.

Management school capping enrollment

Management school capping enrollment The University at Buffalo School of Management is shrinking its incoming class in a bid to improve its place in national rankings and create more demand for higher-quality students. The incoming fall class in the graduate program will be capped at 100 to 120 full- time students, down from about 150, said David Frasier, assistant dean and director of full-time graduate programs in the school. The strategy is very clearly to increase the overall quality of the full-time MBA class with an objective of improving our national profile, he said. More : phoenix.bizjournals.com

Family-Managed Business: Perceptions And Realities

The Centre for Family Managed Business (CFMB) conducted a study on the role of career-orientation of businesswomen in family- managed enterprises. The CFMB is part of the SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) of Mumbai. The study has observed increasing participation by female members of the family in family businesses in the recent past. Such rise in participation has been attributed to nuclear and small families besides lack of enough number of male members to lead growing businesses. Families continue to trust family members instead of reposing faith in strangers. It has, however, been difficult for female family members to

Only 10% women on top B-school rolls

At a time when the spotlight is on PepsiCo chief Indra Nooyi and HSBC Indias CEO Naina Lal Kidwai for having broken the corporate glass ceiling, B-schools across the country are coming under focus for skewed sex ratios on the campus. Data obtained shows some of the most renowned management institutions have as few as 10% women students. Even the institutes with the best gender ratios have over 65% male students. Experts feel the gap can be attributed to entrance tests that are heavily biased in favour of engineers, given their emphasis on mathematics rather than people management and study

Fall Online Degree Enrollment Expected to Continue Upward Trend

Two separate entities back the assertion that enrollment in online degree programming continues its upward trend. The director of marketing for eLearningYellowPages.com, Carrie Sommers, states: According to statistics, the number of students studying for degrees online has increased dramatically over the past several years. In addition, a survey by the Sloan Consortium in 2005 reveals the changing educational landscape. According to the survey, sixty-three percent of schools offering undergraduate face-to-face courses now also offer undergraduate courses online. At the graduate level, forty-four percent of schools with Masters programs now also offer them online. In conducting its study, the Sloan Consortium
