ITHACA — Katie Adams was about 20 and traveling with her parents in Kenya when, despite being careful, she had a severe food allergy reaction, with painful stomach and uterine cramps and difficulty breathing.
Shes allergic to peanuts. In retrospect, she figured she ate too many chapatis, crackers that were probably made of lentil flour. Lentils, like peanuts, are legumes.
To help people like Adams, now 39, researchers at Cornell University in tandem with the University of California, Davis, are seeking 70 people age 18 and over with severe food allergies to peanuts, tree nuts and shellfish to participate in a study on severe food allergies. Food allergies affect almost 7 million Americans.

STUDENT numbers at the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q) continues to grow and has touched 148. The college was established in 2001 in Education City by Qatar Foundation and US-based Cornell University.
In all, 27 countries are represented in the student body, which includes 26 Qataris, an official told Gulf Times yesterday.
WCMC-Q offers a six-year integrated programme of study, comprising a two-year pre-medical course, followed by the four-year medical programme, leading to the Cornell University MD degree.

ornell will celebrate its 139th Commencement Weekend, May 26-27, with about 6,000 graduates getting their diplomas. Cornell President David J. Skorton will give his first Commencement address, and the Convocation speaker will be CNN television journalist Soledad OBrien.
OBrien will give the Senior Convocation Address, May 26, at noon in Schoellkopf Stadium; Skorton will preside over the Commencement ceremony May 27, at 11 a.m., also in the stadium. Both events are open to graduates, their families and the public.

MBA seeks owner-builders laws review
Tasmanias Master Builders Association (MBA) wants the State Government to urgently consider new figures on owner-builders.
The MBA has found 20 per cent of all building over the past 12 months - since the introduction of the Building Act - has been carried out by owner-builders.
The MBA says Tasmania has the highest level of owner-builders in Australia and it wants the provisions of the act re-assessed.
It says owner-builders only have to identify themselves as such when they lodge their plans, and have no other legal requirement than not being involved in more than two projects in
