Hamilton County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Jim Scales, announced the appointment of three new Area Superintendents today. Mr. Don Beard, Dr. Elaine Swafford and Mrs. Aimee Randolph will be the new Superintendents for Areas I, II and III respectively. A spokespersons says the three positions are the cornerstone of Dr. Scales recent reorganization of the Central Office. The new positions are a means of giving increased support to the schools and creating a direct link to community members and parents. The three applicants went through the new selection process that features an interview panel of teachers, community members and administrators along with a formal presentation. Dr. Scales conducts a second round of interviews with selected candidates and makes the final decision.
During the process with the committee and myself, these three emerged as persons whom I felt had the experience, skills and knowledge of curriculum, school operations and quality instruction that is needed to help our schools succeed, Dr. Scales said of his choices. They will be able to work together collaboratively to provide leadership at the campus level and work with our Central Office staff, teachers, parents and communities to support our schools in their quest to improve student achievement.
Mr. Beard, who is currently an Elementary Director supervising 19 elementary schools, will oversee Area I, which encompasses the north river area including Hixson, Red Bank, Signal Mountain, Sale Creek and Soddy Daisy. Mr. Beard began his career in education 38 years ago as a sixth grade teacher in Maryland. He joined Hamilton County Schools in 1973 as a math and history teacher at Soddy-Daisy Middle School. He has held a variety of positions in the district in the last 34 years including curriculum coordinator, principal of an elementary and a middle school, director of elementary education and a school operations director. Mr. Beard holds a Bachelors of Arts in Education from Carson-Newman College and a Masters in Education from George Washington University. He has also pursued other studies at Tennessee Technology University, George Washington University and Harvard Graduate School of Education. Mr. Beard is married with one son and is active in the Ooltewah community.
