Carnegie Mellon Universitys Board of Trustees today approved the reappointment of Carnegie Mellon President Jared L. Cohon for a third five-year term. Cohon became Carnegie Mellons eighth president in 1997 and was reappointed in 2002.
The reappointment was recommended by a 12-member Presidential Review Committee, which was formed last fall in accordance with university bylaws.
Jared Cohon has been, and will continue to be, an exceptional leader of Carnegie Mellon University, said Carnegie Mellon Chairman of the Board David Shapira. He has taken this university to new heights and has overseen tremendous growth in education, research and development. His astute leadership and his inimitable management style have advanced Carnegie Mellon as a leader not only in the Pittsburgh region, but also around the world. Carnegie Mellon Universitys Civil and Environmental Engineering Department has received a $50,000 graduate fellowship from the Mao Yisheng Scientific and Technical Education Fund to honor the memory and technical excellence of Chinas pioneering bridge builder, Mao Yisheng.
Mao, who came to Pittsburgh to study steelmaking and bridge building, earned Carnegie Mellons first Ph.D. in 1919. The establishment of this fellowship was celebrated during a reception June 6, which was attended by Maos daughter, Madame Mao Yulin.

On Friday afternoon at 4 PM, students and faculty received an Awareness Bulletin describing an e-mail including bomb threats which Public Safety and the Swarthmore Police Department believe to be false.
Colleges around the country have been receiving similar messages in the past week, including Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, and MIT. Carnegie Mellon evacuated its science building and was searched by bomb-sniffing dogs, which turned up nothing. The FBI is currently investigating the threats, believed to be a large-scale hoax.

Corporate America wants graduates whove earned master of business administration degrees and is willing to pay more than last year, say local business schools.
The average starting salary of a 2006 graduate with an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University Tepper School of Business is $94,935, almost 7 percent higher than for the 2005 graduates, Ken Keeley, executive director of the Tepper Schools Career Opportunities Center, said Tuesday.
Across the board, the economy has definitely emerged from the hiring downturn we saw two years ago, Keeley said.

The government of the southern Indian state of Kerala will now reappoint retiring government doctors to overcome the paucity of specialists in certain areas.
State Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy said retiring specialist doctors in four disciplines, general medicine, surgery, gynecology and anesthesiology, would be reappointed on a consolidated monthly remuneration of Rs. 25, 000. The remuneration would be in addition to their monthly pension emoluments.
