ornell will celebrate its 139th Commencement Weekend, May 26-27, with about 6,000 graduates getting their diplomas. Cornell President David J. Skorton will give his first Commencement address, and the Convocation speaker will be CNN television journalist Soledad OBrien.
OBrien will give the Senior Convocation Address, May 26, at noon in Schoellkopf Stadium; Skorton will preside over the Commencement ceremony May 27, at 11 a.m., also in the stadium. Both events are open to graduates, their families and the public.
OBrien is a former anchor and now a special correspondent for CNNs Special Investigations Unit, reporting for documentaries and series on important stories for all major CNN programs.

St. John's University conferred 2,146 undergraduate degrees at three graduation ceremonies held over the weekend.
The Rev. Donald J. Harrington, president of the university, gave the keynote address at all ceremonies for the 122d commencement exercises.
Addressing the students at the campus in Jamaica, Queens, yesterday, Father Harrington told the students that "the quality of life in society rests upon the quality of education in our grammar and high schools and in our colleges and universities."

STUDENT numbers at the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q) continues to grow and has touched 148. The college was established in 2001 in Education City by Qatar Foundation and US-based Cornell University.
In all, 27 countries are represented in the student body, which includes 26 Qataris, an official told Gulf Times yesterday.
WCMC-Q offers a six-year integrated programme of study, comprising a two-year pre-medical course, followed by the four-year medical programme, leading to the Cornell University MD degree.

UNCG grads receive their diplomas
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro handed out about 1,000 diplomas Thursday at its December commencement. The ceremony was held at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The head of the schools MBA program delivered the commencement address.
Family and friends packed the coliseum. Many of them said a December ceremony is bonus to the holidays.
Im overwhelmed, said Evette Taylor. My niece, Latisha Tranell Wilkins, is graduating and Im here supporting her. I have my sister, my niece and my nephew here with me. Its overwhelming.
About 500 students who graduated in August were also able to attend the commencement ceremony.

Brenau University graduates were not the only ones to receive diplomas at Saturdays commencement ceremony.
U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal, the commencement speaker, was surprised to be handed a diploma during the afternoon graduation. In addition to the 629 graduate and undergraduate degrees, the university conferred on Deal an honorary doctor of laws degree. A closely guarded secret, it seemed to take the Gainesville Republican by surprise.
