Invitations to participate in the survey were 769 Business Schools, but only 226 responded. Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur, has decided to retain its existing fee structure. It offers two two- year management courses and charges annual fee of Rs1.5 lakh per student. It offers merit-based and need-based scholarships worth Rs20 lakh every year. Father Casimir Raj, Director of XLRI, clarified that the fees now charged are not sufficient to meet expenses. The institute is covering the shortfall with income from other activities like management training programmes and consultancy services.

RANCHI: Graduates from Jharkhand’s top five educational institutes are being wooed by big companies, with fat pay packets. About 3,000 students from the five top institutes have got placements with MNCs. The five institutes are Xavier Labour Research Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur, Institute of Social Management (ISM), Dhanbad, Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS), Ranchi, Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra, Ranchi, and BIT Sindri, Dhanbad. This year, Infosys offered the maximum package of Rs 40 lakh to an XLRI student. For 180 students, there were 298 job offers. The pay package varied between Rs 17 lakh to Rs 40 lakh per annum.

Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) has entered into a partnership with Hughes Escorts Communications Ltd to launch an education programme on business management through broadband satellite connection. Hughes Escorts is a subsidiary of Hughes Network Systems of the US. Hughes Escorts is setting up a studio in XLRI campus at Jamshedpur at a cost of Rs3 crore. XLRI intends to conduct the course live in 14 cities across India from Sep 2002. The 14-month, 360-hours course is expected to cost Rs1.50 lakh per student.
