Control what you can as retirement looms
The most striking thing about mail from readers who are thinking about retirement is something I call the personal action gap.
Whats that?
Simply this. Many devote a lot of effort to things with uncertain results, like investing. Remarkably little attention goes to personal actions that have surefire results.
So here are five simple steps toward retirement. They require personal action. They dont require help from others. They require willpower and intention. They dont require an MBA.

It doesnt pay to take big check from employer
The biggest check you could ever get from your employer is one you should turn down.
When you retire, quit, or are laid off or fired, you can take the funds in your retirement plan in a single check called a lump-sum distribution. If you lose your job, it may be tempting to take the check, but consider the consequences:
Your retirement savings will no longer be able to grow on a tax-deferred basis. The entire amount will be subject to federal and state income taxes in the first year of the lump-sum distribution.

Mumbai, March 7: THE Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), has finally taken decisive action against an employee accused of abusing children of staffers and faculty members living in the institute's campus in Deonar. The employee, who had earlier been asked to go on long leave'''', will be quitting the institute following a proposal for voluntary retirement, which has been''''accepted by the institute.
Director of TISS Profiles RR Singh confirmed that action had been taken against the employee, a senior staffer in the office of the Registrar. ''He had been asked to go on long leave, which he has already done.
The Non-Academic Staff Associations of the five Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have launched an agitation seeking speedy implementation of their various demands. A spokesman for NASA, IIT Mumbai, said the pending demands are raise in retirement age to 62 years; parity in payscales among all the IITs; continuation of assessment/promotion with effect from September 13, 1986; removing anomalies arising out of implementation of Fifth Pay Commission; re-introduction of the slab system of electricity billing for campus residents and rejuvenation of the IITs' grievances committee.
