There was a time, not too long ago, when the idea of pursuing degree courses in arts, science or commerce conjured up images of students bunking classes and chilling out in college canteens or sitting outside the campus on parked cars.

That was when people believed that losers went in for B.A., B.Sc and B.Com while the others — the smarter ones of the lot — got into engineering or medical colleges. But that was then.

The University Grants Commissions scheme — of vocationalisation of education — has now made regular degree courses more challenging. What is more, students can — while they are studying for the regular courses — simultaneously attend specialised diploma courses on the same campus.
